Q&A on Thailand

Not open for further replies.
My friend stayed there last summer. He didn't even know there was a disco in the front. Didn't heard anything. He is picky person too, would have freaked out if he was being kept up by the crap music they play at Icon...lol

Can you find out if he stayed in a one or two bedroom and whether or not it had a living area? There're only four or five pictures on the website, so you can't really tell. I'd appreciate it. I usually stay at Palm Village, but during rainy season, the closer I can stay to camp the better.

I've also pushed my trip back a month and will be in Phuket on July 14th.

Thanks for all the help. I'm a little worried that I haven't heard back from my multiple emails to Sinbi Muay Thai, should I be? Or can I show up that saturday morning and let them know I want to train there for a month and everything will be cool?

Yeah, just show up. I've never booked time at any gym in advance.

Gotobread, my friend said the rooms were very nice. He satyed in the one bedroom in the back corner. He said he could look out and see the elephant farm behind it. He said it was very quiet.

how physical is the clinch work? is it more slow and controlled or is it fast and aggressive? just trying to get an idea of how my shoulder will hold up.

how is the sparring? sounds like the biggest threat is getting partnered up with meathead westerners with egos.

You'll find the clinch work being deceptivly slow and controlled and explodes into fast and aggressive ;). I'm sure you can explain that you're hurt and want to do technique until you get firmed up tho.

And as far as sparring you got it pretty much spot on. Only time I got messed up in sparring was training with a dutch heavyweight who thought I'd be cool to blast me full force in the face which kinda sucked. Sparring with the thais is just lovely, one of my trainers had been ranked nr.1 and even had a win on Buakaw on points, and it just rocked to spar with him. Obviously he could have smoked me anytime, but since he was so in control you could really get a nice flow going, and pick up a lot of stuff.

I hope by Westerners you don't exclusively mean we Americans. When I spar, it's always very controlled. I find that pretty much all foreigners -- regardless of their country of origin -- do not know how to spar. The more inexperienced, the worse it is.

We Americans get blamed for alot. Please don't pin poor sparring manners solely on us.

Question:

What gyms are known for they're Western boxing as well as Muay Thai?

I made a thread about being torn between training at Ling Ho Gym (Den Bosch, Netherlands) and Thailand and decided to go to Thailand because of how far my dollar will go in that country...

I would really like to learn how to string mad combos like Andy Souwer...

Thanks!!!

If you're more concerned with your hands, I'd say train in the Netherlands.

My friend, it's a dream of mine to be trained by John Ling... I would if I could but I can't. Accommodation alone in Den Bosch can cost $1663 USD a month and that's the cheapest I can find.

Looking up the current world boxing champions, Thailand seem to produce some decent talent in the lighter divisions...

WBA Super bantamweight Champion (122 lb, 55.3 kg)
Poonsawat Kratingdaenggym
38-1 (27 KO)
April 30, 2009

WBA Flyweight Champion (112 lb, 50.8 kg)
Denkaosan Kaovichit

WBC Flyweight Champion (112 lb, 50.8kg)
Pongsaklek Wonjongkam

WBC Strawweight (105 lb, 47.6 kg)

Anyone else have any suggestions on where I can find a gym that does boxing and Muay Thai?

I heard Kaewsamrit produces fighters with some nasty hands...

Thanks for your input!!!

Thailand's definitely got some excellent boxers, but I don't know of any gyms offhand that really emphasize boxing. Sorry.

If you're referring to Thai fighters, I find that in general they do not lift nearly as much as say Americans do. The fighters I've seen lifting are usually bench pressing. Of course they also do tons of pushups and situps.

If you mean Thais in general, well, you should see some of the Thais that hang out at the gym in Lumphini Park. They're huge. It's hilarious.

Thais in general are scared to death of lifting weights. They dont want to look 'fat'!

Come to think of it, the Thais that hung out at the gym in Lumphini Park were the only bigger, muscular Thais I've ever seen.

I'm American. "Westerners" is a very broad term. I was not singling out Americans by any means. From what I've read it sounds like the most aggressive people are from continental Europe.

I've been looking into this as a boxer who wants to spend some time in Thailand and train only in western boxing.

Tiger Muay Thai in Phuket have an ex WBO champ as a trainer and will train you in boxing: Muay Thai and MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) Training Camp, Phuket, Thailand: Training Programs for Amateurs to Professionals.

I got in touch with them and they said they often get boxers training there and should be able to get sparring partners for me etc.

If anyone else knows of other camps that can do similar I would love to hear about them :icon_chee

Honestly, Tiger Muay Thai will promise you just about anything to get you to their camp.

If your in Phuket then go to Sinbi....He's a young trainer but has some good people there and a new, clean gym with accomodation away from Patong(bars and whores). Sinbi was an awesome fighter and the atmosphere at his gym is great. I only spent two days there though.
