Q&A on Thailand

Is it easy to get to Phuket from the Bangkok airport? I'll be arriving at 1150pm friday. Best and easiest way to get to and from the airports and or buses, taxis?
What are the best Muay Thai gyms for a farang in Phuket area?
I've heard some good things about Patong Boxing gym but I've emailed the gym multiple times with no response. How is Rawai or Simbi? Great training? I don't know, also how hard would it be for me to find a good clean room near the gyms, the pricing at Rawai for my own room is 22000 baht for a month. That's crazy.

I feel like I'm repeating myself now.

Your best bet is to fly out from Bangkok to Phuket Airport. It's about a one and a half hour flight. You can also take a bus, but that'd be stupid, because it's a 12 hour trip. If you land in Bangkok late -- which you almost definitely will -- you'll have to stay in Bangkok overnight before flying out to Phuket. Just take a taxi into the Sukhumvit area and grab any room. Don't bother with an area like Khao San; you'll never get any sleep and you'll have to compete for a room. It's not worth it. It's also further from the airport and thus a more expensive taxi ride.

I've never been to Patong Boxing Gym, but I've also heard good things. I will tell you where I *have* trained: Rawai, Tiger, and Sinbi. My favorite of the three? Sinbi, by far. Rawai is good for an absolute beginner; or at least it was five years ago when I went there.

Don't bother staying at the gym and don't bother staying at a room they suggest, especially a place like Darin Bungalows, which Rawai is affiliated with. Do some research and you can find nicer rooms for less. I've posted plenty of options in these multiple Thailand threads.

And in the end, your training is going to be as good as you personally make it.

awsome work, i like how it looks more... real, meaning it doesnt look like a mass produced lick and stick tattoo. thats kind of the direction im looking for. i think a more thai version of my sleeve idea would be pretty sweet. they look bad ass dude.

P.S. - No offense intended to anyone that's been tattooed in Thailand or is looking to be tattooed in Thailand. All of my tattoos are done in a very specific, old school style, and it's not really something that I've ever seen successfully replicated in the area.

Here are two of my more recent tattoos, just to give you an idea of what I'm talking about:

nice, very original... i dont think i've seen anything like them before

Thanks for the help. Can I just buy my ticket right there with baht when I arrive that night? By the way can you describe Simbi to me? Trainers, area, close to the beaches, etc? Looks really good online, thanks

about to make room reservations at tiger, any recomendations? all i really want is wi fi and a quite room. like if i want to sleep in sunday, a room where i can go ahead and do that.. doesnt need to be fancy

You can buy tickets there at the airport, but they'll be cheaper if you buy them online in advance.

Most of Sinbi's trainers are listed on their website. They're all very friendly and talented. The gym is a gym -- two rings, a bunch of bags, some free weights, etc. It's only a couple of years old, so the equipment is still in great shape. Nai Harn beach is extremely close and it's small, but it's still nice and barely anyone visits. Most people travel north a bit to Kata or Karon. The area's got plenty of cheap eats, laundry, etc. As for nightlife, there's Icon within walking distance, Laguna, and the strip of bars on Rawai beach. Or you can hire a taxi into Patong for about 500 baht.

When I trained at Tiger, I stayed at Shanti Lodge just down the road. Very nice and very affordable. And they have wi-fi. It's extremely quiet, but that has a lot to do with the fact that they don't have TVs in the rooms and they don't allow overnight guests. If you're interested in girls, it's not the place for you.

^ im not intrested in meeting girls while im in phuket, as hot as thai girls can be i have a cutie waiting at home for me and im not there to party. im going to train hard and get to experiance thailand.

Gotobread, do you have a place to recommed around Sukhumvit? I'm arriving at 11pm and need to get over to Kaewsamrit early the next morning to visit a friend before I fly up to Chiang Mai that night.

The last two times I stayed on KSR and that sucks. I rarely spend much time in BKK, so I really don't know much about Sukhumvit.

I'm really interested in training at Kaewsamrit for the summer...was wondering at what level of MT training should I be at to consider training there?

Also I read a few pages back about their subpar accommodations, any tips on looking for hotels to stay at near Kaewsamrit? Much thanks!

Hey man I am going to Kaewsamrit too! But in Sept.

Could someone break down the different areas of Thailand, like Chang Mai, Bangkok, Pattaya and Phuket? I've been plan on training at Scorpion in Pattaya for a month but I'm not a party guy at all. I want to experience Thailand and there natural beauty when i'm resting on Sunday but it sounds like Pattaya is a huge party town. I want to be at a great camp where I get a lot of great 1 on 1 instruction, train twice a day and be in a safe, clean area where I can be by a beautiful beach. Thanks, thinking Phuket/Patong is where I should go and train????????????

Go to Chiang Mai.

What's your budget?

I like the President's Park Hotel on Soi 22, but it's about 2200 baht per night. Plenty of cheaper places if you just want a bed, AC, and some wifi.

You can use either Nana hotel or Dynasty hotel for about 1000 baht, but both are pretty much in Sleaze Central (and at Nana you can get stuck above the disco).

^
Dynasty Inn Grande (related to the Dynasty) is really nice, and if you look hard rooms can be had for 1,900 baht.

My budget is what ever. I really don't want to be in the middle of sleaze central. But it is only for one night, so it's not that big of a deal.

I will be in BKK for 3-4 nights in August on my way home.

If you can afford 150$ USD pr. night then Sheraton at Asok is cool. Or Grand Hyatt Erawan across the street.

Book your hotel from Asiarooms for discounts.

Its like this in Bangkok:

<1000 baht - Shithole in tourist districts or decent low budget outside.

1500-2000 baht - Mid range, decent but not much better than low range.

2500 baht and up - High end, very good value for money.

Go to Chiang Mai.

This, I travelled a bit in the south, and ended up staying in Chiang Mai. It's nice there, good training, not too many distractions, but big enough to give you a break if you want. Also it's not so touristy as in the south. In the south all the thais live of the tourists, in the north you kinda get the feeling that the thais dont live of the tourist to the same extent, so it's easier to meet "regular" thais, at least in my experience.

Fuck Khao San although, in a pinch, Rambuttri is a bit more tolerable. A little more quiet, and there's a better chance of finding a room.

I've probably stayed at a dozen different spots in the Sukhumvit area -- never for more than a night or for more than 1000 baht. Most places are pretty much the same, but STAY THE HELL AWAY FROM THE FEDERAL. I stayed there before my flight out and ended up being eaten alive by bed bugs. It made for a very miserable 23 hour flight home.

You can't go wrong with the Wendy House which is (I think) one soi over from the Jim Thompson House. I've stayed there twice now, and the only fault I can really find with the place is lugging everything up all of those stairs, but you get that a lot in Bangkok.

Also, I should quit fucking around and actually make it up to Chiang Mai at some point.

First, thanks everyone for the info in this thread.

I might be going to Chaing Mai at the end of this year. My girlfriend has a friend who will be teaching English there for 6 months. We might go up there together, her to visit her friend, and me to train.

If anyone has done/is doing any training there and wants to give me any suggestions or tips, please PM me. Right now I am thinking of going to Lanna Muay Thai, mainly because that is the one I have found the most information on.

I've been training Muay Thai for about a year. I'm looking for good training, because I like good training, but I'm not looking to fight anytime soon.

My main quesiton is this:
I have very little experience sparring in the clinch. This is because I have a neck injury that always flares up after a serious clinch session. Would I be able to avoid clinching if I went to a camp in Chaing Mai? Is it something I could request from my trainers? Would it result in worse training all around, because I wouldn't be taken as seriously?

I'm always working on strengthening and stretching my neck, so maybe it won't be an issue come December. But I'm worried that that might be wishful thinking.

Thanks in advance!
