Q&A on Thailand

Thanks a lot guys for doing this. I'm 20 years old and I'm looking for a good mix of vacation and training. I have no experience in MT whatsoever, but I'm fairly athletic and in decent shape so I hope I can pick it up quick. I would like to go for probably about a month and if I had to guess I'd say I would probably go out 2 or 3 nights a week. I would still go to training the next morning and do everything asked, but I don't want to disrespect anyone if I seem a little sluggish. So I guess my questions are:
-Can I develop a solid base in a month with no experience?
-If I can, how much would going out occasionally affect that?
-Any reccomendations on good camps for someone in my situation?
-How do the Thai women like the white guys and how much do I have to be worried about them chasing me for money? Also are there a lot of other foreign women?
Thats all I can think of for now. Thanks again guys for answering all of our questions, I've done a lot of research on this stuff but its kind of hard to get anything better than an opinion from someone who's been there.

Haha. They're painful during the massage, kind of like deep tissue massages. It hurts but after the massage you're looser, more limber and very relaxed.

if they help with recovery how often should i consider having them, and do they have places near tiger mt?

Its like that good pain though, if you like that kind of thing.

They offer them everywhere...they are not hard to come by so I'm sure you can find one close to Tiger.

doesn't sound like you've done any research.

Sounds like you need to go to Pattaya for a month.

No, not if you are training "casually", which is what it sounds like you want to do. That being said, it doesn't mean you won't learn anything. You'd be much better served at least trying to do a few months of Muay Thai in the US before trying to do it in Thailand. If you go to one of the camps that cater to foreigners, you'll find other people in situations similar to yours. Just don't expect a lot of attention from the trainers.

-If I can, how much would going out occasionally affect that?

You are 20 years old, and will find that Thai nightlife is like nothing you can imagine. You'll be tempted to stay out until 4 AM, and that temptation will win. That will hurt, if not destroy, your morning training sessions.

What's wrong with women chasing you for your money? You are chasing them for their vaginas.

Don't underestimate the erotic power of economic disparity. To put this in perspective, an educated Thai woman who has a good white collar job in an office might make anywhere from $800-$1000 per month if she's lucky. Even if you find a nice girl who likes you, it would be hard for her to ignore the opportunity you represent. You are also not going to find nearly as many Thai women who will hook up for short term relationships as you might in the US.

Also are there a lot of other foreign women?

There are a reasonable number of foreign women tourists that you might hook up with. Khao San road is probably your best bet.

Has anyone ever trained at Kobra Muay Thai in Koh Phangen? Looks beautiful and it seems like you can train all day and relax by the beach all night. I'm thinking about training in Bangkok Saturday then taking the train to Koh Phangen and then taking the ferry to Koh Phangen. Thanks also I heard that Por Pramuk can really smell with the pig farm next to it, has anyone ever trained there before and noticed that?

No, but Koh Pangan is a bit out of the way. If you're looking more for a nice combo of training and beach vacation as opposed to super-serious training, it might be nice. Probably not nearly as many sparring partners though, if that's a concern.

Also, Koh Samui is an option, it's a tad easier to get to than Koh Pangan, and there's grappling there (or at least there was). They have a new state of the art training center near the main area of Chaweng Beach.

It's funny how many foreigners go over there and expect the Thai women to fall at their feet because I suppose Thai women are supposed to fall head over heels for all of these HANDSOME WHITE MEN. Most of these girls do not give a shit about you, especially in areas like Rawai and Chalong where there are plenty of white dudes. They want your money, so if you're going to participate in the nightlife, give it to them.

And two massages a day are essential. I've seen very few "beautiful" women giving massages, but I've only ever been concerned with the quality of the massage.

I asked more because of things I've read about them following you back to your hotel trying to get money off of you. A lot of you guys have been there so thats why I ask. It makes more sense to get advice from people that have been there or live there as opposed to finding info on a wikipedia type site. Thanks for the replies.

Not sure where those particular dudes party or whatever, but that has never, ever happened to me.

Are you saying its more casual gyms in Pattaya or a lot of people looking to do the same thing I am? I've also been told Koh Samui would be a good mix of nightlife and training, does anyone have any experience at gyms there or just the area in general? Thanks again.

I actually read that on some Thai tourism site that basically explained the everyday differences in Thailand compared to the US. A lot of it seemed exaggerated, but I've obviously never been there so I really don't know for sure.

the nightlife is everywhere in thailand, just better in some parts then others.
as for thai massage its free where i go because i own a massage shop, best investment i ever made.

Training in Thailand is something i have really wanted to do for many, many years. You guys living there are living it up good!

When you get some time of work and the money together just drop one of us a message, I'm sure everyone including myself would be happy to help! :)

I'll keep that in mind! Do you go to any particular camp?
