@RollSonnenRoll @Frank23 @My Spot has you guys ever heard of this Lucha Libre pilot that WCW filmed back in '99?

It popped up on my Youtube suggestions last night but I never heard of it before, i guess WWE Vault just found it in the warehouse, thats what I call perfect timing

I'm about 3 matches in so far, coulda done without the racist pandering in the beginning but the action is good and the crowd is hot as fuck

Nitro Girls salsa dancing with some Latin studs is best for business

A few classic Lucha Libre clusterfuckery moments in there, the spot where 8 different Luchadors keep jumping off the top rope 1 at a time and missing the splash is so dumb, you think they'd figure it out after the 3rd or 4th guy

Wonder if Eric Bischoff had "pork rinds" in the concession stand

Yeah it was supposed to air on Telemundo to combat WWF Super Astros on Univision. I suspect that fell through when the NBA lockout ended and WCW lost their proposed NBC deal (since NBC owns Telemundo).

I’m still hot that we never got that

Yea, thats something I am curious about, I wonder if WCW wouldve been able to bust out some extra razzle and dazzle for some huge network television specials the way the WWF was able to do 15 years earlier
Most likely no, especially not in '99 when they had already shined up every bell and whistle they had but its still fun to think about

Some reports have it as June 5, others have it as June 6, we here in this thread have already agreed to use the June 5 number just as we have also agreed to use Phil Zacko's number of 87,000 people in Shea Stadium in 1980, only 30,000 over capacity and 50,000 over the reported number

It's a huge butterfly effect for me. We know Eric and the boys didn't give a damn about building to PPVs but they were such marks for ratings. I could see a world where creatively they are forced to build storylines and programs that culminate in 4 seasonal network specials. This keeps WCW steady through 99. Thus never brining in Russo, thus the ratings never tanking, thus all of Time Warners debt being dumped on their books and finally, that damn Jamie Kellner never canceling Nitro.

Cody promoting some good ol wholesome Minute Maid Fruit Punch. Glad it ain't more booze!

I used to love Minute Maid fruit punch and tropical punch back in the olden days but it doesnt taste the same anymore, still get it on a rare occasion but the sweet delight is gone

Agreed, I think that would've given WCW some guardrails/guidelines to fill in the blanks with story and helped tremendously.

I still find it weird that it's 2025 and there are people (in the business even) still hung up on WCW having a completely different BUSINESS MODEL than WWE. WWE was an independent, family-owned (until the IPO) "Sports Entertainment" company that had to be self-sufficient and make its own money to run. They NEEDED to pop decent PPV numbers because at the time, that and live ticket sales were a big chunk of their revenue. Nowadays PPV doesn't even exist in WWE's business model.

WCW was a pro wrestling company owned by a TV Broadcasting corporation, receiving a yearly budget and not having to live and die by their live attendance or PPV buy rates. They didn't NEED to care much about PPV, because it was never a big driver of revenue for them. Turner didn't give a shit about PPV, they gave a shit about television ratings and advertiser exposure. So at that time, WWE relied on PPV as a large source of revenue and the measuring stick of their success. WCW at the time relied on Television ratings and advertiser appeal as their measuring stick. I think if WCW focused on 4 big TV specials a year like you said, that would've gone a long way to improving their long-term success. Yes, they were both pro wrestling companies that ran live shows with independent contractors. That's pretty much where the similarities end for both business models.

@Pittie Petey @RollSonnenRoll Oh boy oh boy I found a channel on YT that has every JCP episode of Saturday Night + Best of Saturday Night with the 1985 commercials still in.

Yea, thats a great channel, i put it on auto play sometimes when i sleep, it has a huge collection of World Wide Wrestling episodes from the same era also, those are so frickin good, the best stuff JCP ever produced imo

Wonder why they were there (Angle was still WWF champ when it was taped and HHH was already with Steph IRL).
