Social Punk rock band kicks out drummer because of refusal to take vaccine

I can't think of many artists who got better once they were actually old though. I can only really think of David Bowie, Robert Wyatt and Scott Walker who were even still good.

Edit - Leonard Cohen too actually.

This is true for people in general though. Constantly reinventing yourself and improving is effortful. When people hit 45-50 and they're making decent money & are established in their career, they typically stop trying to improve and just coast.

Yeah, plus the fanbase has gotten older and is generally invested in their older style so it's a risk for them to evolve and risk alienating their fanbase when they can just put out substandard versions of their older work and sell records anyway.

Tom Waits as well.

True that

I never bought that argument, the idea that bands are only good in their youth. Yeah everyone peaks 2 years after picking up and instrument and can never improve or learn new things. Young good looking people are more marketable and that people want their favorite bands to do the same thing over and over it has created this false idea of what music actually is.
LOL @ false idea of what music is <lol>

People like what they like. Who the fuck are you to judge their taste? A big reason people go to see old bands playing all their old music is so they can sing along. The familiarity is part of the fun. I like new stuff because it's new and unfamiliar and old stuff because it's old and familiar. I enjoy both. If you want to limit yourself go ahead but the rest of us will continue to enjoy what we enjoy.

A lot of these bands may not even have the members who wrote the songs in them anymore too. The Guess Who got sued recently by Burton Cummings to make them stop performing his songs. But other bands don't have this issue and keep performing.

And Peter Gabriel. And David Byrne. And Bryan Adams.

When was the last time those guys released something decent? Maybe I need to check out their recent stuff.

Probably not Bryan as I didn't like him when he was young anyway.

I haven't looked it up but now that you've asked I have to check to satisfy my curiosity.

Since you're a Brit, I'll forgive you for your comment about Adams. ;)

In Canada, saying that's a good way to get summer teeth, bud.

tbh I was saying in another thread I don't really seem to like much Canadian music in general.

I like Neil Young, Leonard Cohen, GSYBE!, early Arcade Fire, I think Rush are alright and not a great deal else. Some Destroyer is okay actually.

To be fair we only used to hear Canadian music in Canada because the government forced the radio stations to play it. I think it's pretty much dead now.

There's some great stuff from back in the day though.

Well, as I said earlier. People can like what they like. I'm not declaring myself an expert or anything. I'm totally out of the loop on anybody even remotely recent lol. I had to search for GSYBE. Never heard of them. But regarding what I was saying in the previous post, it turns out the artists I mentioned are involved in a lot of other shit aside from writing studio albums. Just because they aren't producing new hits anymore doesn't mean they're coasting.

Speaking for myself only, creativity is a capricious bitch. Sometimes things may come easily but they often don't. I can understand that when it comes to songwriting, if you go long enough without coming up with anything you like, the best thing to do would be to do something entirely different for a while and return with a fresh view.

I'll check them out. I'm pretty open minded music wise.

Looking through my RYM I also give Canadian credit to Venetian Snares, Devin Townsend, Tim Hecker, Joni Michell, Voivod, Caribou and Broken Social Scene. So more than I thought.

The Offspring??? THe Offspring??? hahaha had no clue they were still around

GSBYE are great if you like longer post rock songs. They're kind of an acquired taste but if you want to check out a good song of theirs try this. You'll know pretty quickly if it's your thing or not I think.

I had no idea what "post rock" meant before today lol. So far, though, I'm about 5 minutes in and I'm not sure how it differs from prog rock like Jethro Tull. But then, I know shit about shit when it comes to the technical ins and outs of music genres.

@Hellowhosthat

So I been wracking my brain on that question and although it's subject to argument I have come up with a few.

Social distortion. Best album white light white heat white trash. Also one of the best albums of all time. It's album number 5

Rancid. Out come the wolves and I could also argue life won't wait. Albums 4 and 5

Nofx punk in drublic. Or maybe white trash 2 heebs and a bean. Albums 4 and 5 . Also album 7 so long and thanks for all the shoes I would have to rank pretty high.

Greenday. While one could argue its dookie i think its insomniac. Either way thats albums 3 and 4

I want to say a lot of bands best is one and 2 but 3 and 4 seems to be coming up a bunch the more I think and if I meditate on this for a while I can probably think of more.

Also tim barry of avail for a minute seemed to get better with each album until the peak at 4 with 40 miler and start to go downhill at number 5. He was old before he even started doing the solo thing. But I don't know if he counts because he isn't a band.

I'm thinking more when they get older though. I think most punk bands music dropped off when they got older. With Green Day they were probably very early 20's when they released Insomniac (agree that's their best record).

The guys I would argue maybe did evolve as they got older would be John Lydon with PiL and Ian Mackaye with Fugazi but idk if Sex Pistols and Minor Threat fans followed them.

@Hellowhosthat

Yea I agree for the most part almost no one is doing their best work around 8 40.

Way I was thinking about it was that a lot of legendary albums come from later into bands journeys than people realize.

Doing great works as older men all I got is tim barry doing his solo stuff which I love.

I can't count hellmouth as suicide machines albums but Jay was doing some cool stuff in his late 30s with hellmouth . Fresh band but older grown up punks.

I have legit seen 2 fist fights break out in my life over fugazi vs minor threat and 1 over all vs the decendants. That fugazi vs threat gets way more heated than a lot of folks would think.
