The development of technology has given rise to despicable behaviour. We have discussed privacy issues with regard to drones, but smartphones have created a new range of problems.

For example this week, a 10 year old girl jaywalked and got hit by a car and hurt badly. Ambulance and police were on the scene quickly, but a crowd quickly gathered and people were filming the victim with their smartphone. White blankets were erected, but people still tried to film from above the blankets. Police were busy helping and not able to stop all of the assholes.

What should be done about this trend?

Beat them to a bloody pulp and record when they shuffle off their mortal coil as well as prevent cops and ambulance from coming to their rescue.

#1 - Issue phone jammers to select government employees.

#2 - Make it illegal for civilians to possess a phone that does not have the capability of being remotely disabled by Emergency Personnel.

I dont know. This is one of those things where passing a law might end up doing more harm than good. Say you cant record emergency workers doing there job for example and BAM no more recording cops either you know?

Its things like this that if not approached with caution and a level head can go to the supreme court and do all kinds of wacky things or damage to the first amendment .

I would be ok with some kind of law that prosecutes people that film instead of help in some way though if it was possible to pass.

Not a chance on number 2. That is a horrible idea if you enjoy your privacy.

Nothing should be done. It's unpleasant, sure, but how many people have had the shit illegally kicked out of them by cops that no one would know about if a passerby wasn't able to record it?

First people that don't render aid are ass holes and should be treated as such.

Second while I'm not a fan of recording others misery as long as they are not interfering with efforts to aid or getting in the way in any way they do and should have the right to record events as long as there is not expectation of privacy (the first amendment).

I don't support any laws to fix people being ass holes but legal social pressure (treating ass holes like ass holes) is fine and should be encouraged.

Yeah, this is going to go over well with the current atmosphere around the relationship between the police and the public... Can I get innumerable misuses of the word "fascism" for 500 Alex?

I mean I get the first amendment idea and all but in the age of YouTube things get quite complicated. If I upload the victim 's misery somewhere and get 300k views and profit monetarily from it, it get s even more complicated.

Bring more cameras.

When the insurance company tries to weasel out of it people will be changing their tunes.

Do you get that passing laws against it might come with some very major consequences ?

It's not complicated. Some people are assholes, that's life. You can't outlaw every little piece of life that hurts your feelings, partially because you can't predict every potential consequence of a law.

He was talking about profiting from this type of behavior, not "feelings".

How is he affected by someone else profiting from being a shitty human being?
It hurts his feelings.

If he's so worried about people profiting from being shitty, he wouldn't want to give the state, lawyers or the lawsuit-happy even more arbitrary power to abuse.

Last time I was in Vancouver I saw this too. Some immigrant family crossed against the light and one of their kids got fucking SMOKED. There was a crowd of people around with their phones out just recording the goings on. My GF and I just dipped out because there was already and ambulance there and we didn't particularly feel like getting a closer look at a little kid with her guts hanging out. But a lot of people apparently did.

If you film me while I am bleeding out, you are definitely hurting me. Call it an insult or an invasion of privacy - I cannot stop you and should have legal means to do so.

Except its not an invasion of privacy

You have no reasonable expectation of privacy in public, that doesn't magically change if you are giving birth or bleeding
