Proposal to make the BMF belt objective and coherent

If the UFC doesn’t want to build it into something real, fine, just retire it. But pretending that “it started as a PR tool” automatically means “it can never evolve” is lazy thinking

There's nothing to evolve from. The only thing lazy is creating a belt so two exciting and very popular fighters who could never hold a belt get to fight for one. It's a gimmick and a lazy way to generate revenue.

I agree with one thing though, they need to retire it

A schedule forces events even when they don’t make sense, a standard filters which ones actually deserve it.

If you can’t see the distinction, you’re proving exactly why the belt needs rules

There's litterally no difference. It's still the UFC making whatever fights they want.

You spent so much effort on this too 😂

According to your stupid rules, none of the former BMF champions would have even qualified for a shot at the belt.

It's time to stop and let it go.

Propose one better. I just think it could make the belt more valuable if it had some criteria for obtaining it. Otherwise it just look like a gift from the UFC.
The BMF belt is literally a meritless belt from a criteria perspective. You have to be a fan favourite, have another fan favourite as a resonable rival.

The UFC barely follows criteria for its actual divisional champions so maybe we try starting there and not worry about their BMF made up belt?

I look at the BMF belt as a "legacy championship" the UFC hold once each year, outside of a set weight class. I don't believe future BMF titles will be limited to lightweight. This is where we get fights between ageing UFC legends that are still in the top of their weight classes.

Assuming the UFC continue to have 1 BMF title fight per year, I would say the 2026 contenders are Max Holloway vs Charles Oliveira, and Jon Jones vs Alex Pereira.

cant believe there are fans that worry about a fake belt like bmf
kinda like worrying about an interim belt

i mean ive seen max holloway carrying a fake belt
i think its funny they think its real lmao

You can't quantify being a bad mother fucker. People know it when they see it.
AV checks out 👊 JL is a certified BMF. All Valley champ 1982 and 1983 before LaRusso cheated and his corner used banned performance enhancing techniques.

The point of the BMF was so UFC could have a "title" fight headline PPV cards and make money.

TS:

"it became a marketing trophy without clear criteria or continuity."

Like, wtf does he mean it became that? Hasn't it always been a stupid marketing trophy? It just allows them to overcharge us for another shitty PPV without having to book an actual champion (UFC 300 being the exception).

The BMF belt was meant to reward the most exciting fighters in the UFC, the ones who step in to finish fights, not play for points.
But the idea lost direction. It became a marketing trophy without clear criteria or continuity.

Here’s a simple fix: one measurable rule that defines what “BMF” actually means.

Core criterion: Finishing rate
Finishing rate = (wins by KO or submission ÷ total wins) × 100
Eligibility threshold: finishing rate of 70% or higher in UFC fights

This captures what really matters, how often a fighter ends the fight instead of leaving it to the judges.

Eligibility rules
• Only UFC fights count, to keep the comparison fair.
• Fighters need at least five UFC wins to qualify.
• The 70% threshold can vary slightly (65–75%) depending on divisional averages.

Activation
• When two eligible fighters meet, the UFC can announce that the fight will be for the BMF belt.
• There’s no fixed schedule; the title appears only when the matchup deserves it. Keep it scarce.

Champion rules
• The winner becomes the new BMF.
• The title isn’t linear, each BMF edition stands on its own (BMF I, II, III, etc.).
• No mandatory defenses. The champion holds the title symbolically until the next eligible fight.

Why it works
• One clear metric, easy to verify.
• Focused on finishing, not point-fighting.
• Keeps the belt rare and meaningful.
• Rewards the style fans actually want to watch.

In short:
The BMF belt should remain symbolic, but earned.

Yes, this text was formatted using AI, but the idea is mine.
Just make open weight pyramid. Do it in some country which will sanction this, or simply finally do “Mortal Combat Island” and do one weekend pyramid…prize pool should be huge 10+ m and some special finger/watch for winner aswell. - This would be biggest event in MMA history.

decent idea OP but dana likes doing stuff like this for marketable fighters. i know you're basing it on finishing rate but dana historically likes the junie brownings, julian lanes, sean omalley's, and conor mcgregors and i can't see him doing this for guys who qualify.

I'm not "worrying" about anything, I'm discussing it in a MMA forum.

you're calling me stupid for making an effort to propose something and yet you reply is useless, it proposes nothing and call others dumb from discussing things in a MMA forum, you're entitled and lazy. Blocked.
