You seem to forget that the UFC didn't have a LW division for several years. It shouldn't be surprising that some top LWs came from outside the UFC.

For a fan to accept they're great, they must compete in the UFC regularly, unfortunately. In reality, it's completely possible for great fighters to exist outside of the UFC. Look at the HW division.
