hm, didn't see this one coming.
why did Del Toro not follow Yates?
didn't want to give Carapaz a free ride?
not very smart IMO.
a white jersey instead of a pink one.

Ha! Yatesy one half of the staccato brothers, wins the Giro. Have to have a heart of stone to begrudge him this one.

On a climb where he lost his 2018 Giro.

and it was not like the rest were slow, they were not.

Because Yates attacked 4 times to get away and there were still 14k left of a 9.4% avg climb.
and..

Del Toro couldn't go? So him holding the jersey all these days was just a sham I guess. They called his name and no one answered apparently. Btw, what is 'secret sauce'?
lol

Almost forgot Chris Harper who scored his first World Tour level win today. Two wins is pretty good result for Jayco AlUla.

4 attacks on a brutal climb is something few pros have seen. You add that there are 40k to go and 14 on the climb and what goes through your mind is: "I could blow up bad here and lose 25mins".

You cover 3 attacks and the guy goes a 4th time, you have no idea if he's going to go a 6th.

"secret sauce'. No idea but i don't for a minute believe that Vingagaard was 2 mins faster than Pogacar on St Gervais Les Bains when Pogacar was 1min faster than everyone else. Pluegge's nervous 'go ahead check his blood' comment made me pause and think 'I've been tested 500 times!'.

ah, kind of what I thought. makes sense now. how did Yates pull that performance out of his ass I wonder?

"The LR team has come out with wattage estimates. 6.2 w/kg for 59 mins for Yates. Even taken with a grain of salt, those are better numbers than I think anyone would expect out of this Giro, and better than Carapaz has ever done in his career."
Interesting.

Great Giro, one of the most enjoyable grand tours in recent memory IMO.
Well deserving winners.

I wonder how does the pecking order inside UAE go for the handful of big races that Pog does not race? Send in the 6 leaders clusterfuck? How do you feel if you are locked to the team until 2040 and future looks like deluxe domestiquing for the next big thing?

Matthew Brennan is terrorizing Tour of Norway.

UAE going with internal battle royale.

That’s not even accounting for the fact that Carapaz and EF had taken a few shots as well.

There’s only so much you can do, I mean, if Yates can go an set a pace like that you just ride your pace and have to hope that he falls apart at some point and you can reel him back in.

We all know the giro tends to come down to the best climber in the queen stage at the end of the tour and Yates crushed it. Idk if it was because of fitness, or if it was an experience error with del toro who let the leash out on Yates thinking there was no way he’d take that gap on him, and then he’s stuck with Carapaz who over cooked it in the first half of the climb. There’s no way to really know. But I think Yates would have dropped him off even if del toro stuck to his wheel for a period of time because the pace was just so high.

Bonkers level of climbing, he just looked fluid the entire time. You never really saw him stall. Just steady, aggressive pacing. Del Toro will get another crack at a tour one day I’m sure. He should be proud of the podium here.

Absolutely.

Carapaz also burned himself earlier in the race doing heroic attacks. Those add up.

This is my least favorite part of the year. The giro wraps. You have the cycling bug. You’re hyped for the tour, and then it’s like a slow painful month long crawl to the starting line

Well I hope it helps that Dauphine starts in few days and the top3 GC riders are all there.

UAE sending in what looks to be their likely Tour squad minus Almeida who is doing Tour de Suisse.

-SOLER Marc
-SIVAKOV Pavel
-NARVÁEZ Jhonatan
-NOVAK Domen
-POGAČAR Tadej
-WELLENS Tim
-POLITT Nils

Went up Diablo early this morning, cool and humid at the base. Heat inversion occurring, so hot, windy and dry higher up.

And grats to Dylan Groenewegen for a masterful sprint in Stage 1 of the Tour of Slovenia.

(Just did a deep dive into Slovenia/Slovakia. *The More You Know. Fascinating.)

I am looking forward to how the Big 3 choose to race it.

The great thing about the place of my birth is that it is one of the 4 screen savers for LG TV.

It cracks me up how people confuse Slovenia with Slovakia so to make things that much more confusing a married a girl that is first generation Slovak born outside Slovakia.

I think the other cool thing is that both nations are relatively new as independent. What, 91 and 95?
One from Yugoslavia and the other from the Czech Republic.
