Islam was supposed to fight a hulking giant of a LW tonight. He didn't choose to fight a smaller guy. And that smaller guy has been an established LW for years. He's not a featherweight, just because he once was.

BJ is hard to judge. He mostly failed going up, and probably could have had a better LW career if he just stayed there.

But I guess that's what made BJ the madman he was. As far as LW careers go though.....both Islam and Khabib pass him IMO.

I still think Khabib, Islam, BJ, and Gomi have a case for GOAT LW resume.

Some of BJ's best LW wins like Uno Din Gomi Ludwig (was at WW I know) were not in his title run that consisted of Joe Daddy, Sherk, Florian, then Diego. I think Islam has the better title run. I can't knock Islam for his fight tonight, Arman got injured shit happens, Islam did everything he was supposed to do. I think Volk is a phenomenal win, just like BJ was a phenomenon win for GSP.

Head to head in their primes I think Islam wins, but it would be a fun matchup.

There is no "think" to it. Islam would absolutely destroy any version of BJ.

You could make Islam cut for 155 and let BJ juice to the gills and come in whatever his optimum fight weight is with no cut, and Islam Makhachev would still finish him inside 3 rounds.

I say this with all due respect to BJ. BJ fought guys from a by gone era and FAR lower skill level.

BJ Penn never once came back in a fight he was losing. Props where they are due, but his track record as an absolute frontrunner takes away from his warrior status for me. If BJ dropped a round, he was probably going to drop every round after.
