Emma Raducanu's return to competitive tennis ended in disappointment, as Maria Sakkari secured a 6-3 3-6 6-1 victory in the United Cup, extinguishing the UK's hopes of progressing to the quarter-finals.

The British number one had been absent from the court for 83 days, having concluded her previous campaign early due to physical difficulties in China.

Light bone bruising on her right foot had also forced her withdrawal from an eagerly-anticipated clash with Naomi Osaka just days earlier.

Tuesday's encounter in Perth represented a must-win fixture for the UK, with victory required to secure their passage from Group E in the mixed team competition.

I look at it less standing up for Amorim but pushing back against the true rot (players/ownership) and not falling for their usual scapegoating. Amorim was out of his depth and should never have been selected.

He wanted to have a full commitment to his style of play, and a big investment to match. United wasnt all in and that became clear at the transfer window. Despite not delivering results, Amorim refused to budge and then forced the issue to a close with the press conference. It became untenable and he had to go at that point.
