About 76% of penalties in shootouts are scored (it's 85% in normal play, due to less pressure). So on average the chance of Costa saving three penalties in a row is less than 1.4% (as sometimes players miss the goal or hit the post).
To make things even less likely, the team that shoots first wins 60.5% of the time, and Slovenia shot first.

also lol at this guy. How can anyone be a fan is beyond me

You wouldn't be just saying this stuff so I swap out the AV, right? It seems like you really mean it this time.

Not to be that nerd, but maybe not quite.

Possible that a team that misses two in a row feels extra pressure, thus making their chances of scoring on the third attempt after two straight misses even less than the 76% quoted.

Definitely.

It'd be interesting to see a study of which teams win shootouts more but I'm guessing it'd be the ones with more shots, shots on goal, passes completed, etc.

I'd say the dominant team wins about 70% of the time

Aha sorry, thought we were talking tournaments as a whole.

Nah, I can’t get behind this. Missing penalties are gut-wrenching and probably the worst feeling in all of sports.

Universal guy code says a fan should never mock a guy for missing one unless the shooter plays for Liverpool or slips in the rain.

Ah well in that case it's a little more varied, especially with the Euros.

Lately, Italy, Portugal were fairly surprising winners. Greece and Denmark in decades past were shocking.

But the World Cup and Copa America don't have nearly as many surprises. It's always been one of the top 2-3 teams that win it.

Even the Champions League has few big surprises. Chelsea in 2012 and Porto with Mourinho are the only big shocks this century that I can think of.

True

Will add Chelsea in 2021(?) and Pool in in 2005.

When you finish 5th in your league, winning the CL means far less, imo.

See Dortmund this year, too.

But -play the last WC 100 times, how many times do Argentina win? Hell after losng to Saudi Arabia, they'd be in massive trouble if they wern't in a wank group with Poland and Mexico.......
