Power Guillotine vs Elbow Up Guillotine

i want to hear your view as my view on it disagrees, check previous pages for my take on the "marcelotine"

It's not my view, I'm simply telling you how Marcelo teaches and does his guillotine.

I could care less if people call his style a guillotine or name it after himself.

I just jumped on this thread because you mentioned that Marcelo is simply doing the guillotine correctly.

My view is that he is doing the guillotine different than 99% of the people in bjj. And, that 1% probably learned from him.

Yes, he is doing the guillotine "correctly"...but he is also doing it "differently"

ok ur right with these details as they obviously arent identical but my point is marcelo is creating the V and lifting while rorion creates the V and stretches opponent, in the end you seal off the neck and force them into the V, like pulling head down in a triangle, many people learn guillotine in a way where power is needed to make up for bad positioning

rorion creates V and forces neck to get squeezed just like marcelo, i dunno to me it's the same but u r right application differs, marcelo does a standing guillotine in guard basically, no?

and i am probably getting way into this because it is my favorite sub, i love lifting people off their feet when done properly, takes literally no effort, love this sub

If you really like this sub, you really owe it to yourself to check out mginaction.com

You can get a free week trial as long as you remember to cancel your membership before they charge you on the 7th or 8th day.

Marcelo teaches his guillotine a zillion times, each time adding different details.

Given your interest in the move, I think you will really enjoy it.

BTW- its been ages since I did the "Traditional" guillotine...but I think the "V" is used because you are cutting off both sides of the carotid artery with your bicep and forearm.

With Marcelo's guillotine, like Drew mentioned, the "V" - which I suppose you mean by the flared elbow is not used to cut off the side arteries...the elbow flare is simply used to create a barrier to prevent the opponent to stack into you and take off pressure from the direct upward pressure into their throat.

Marcelo's choking motion is a direct straight up pull into your opponent's throat/adam's apple- not into the carotid.

CAshoplata

ask marcelo where he got his version from tonight..ill be to busy focusing on dodgeball..

fyi-

at the academy..all white belts are first taught the traditional one
and than students are taught the marcelotine as they progress

Any of you ever used the snake choke variation?

(kind of like a D'arce without the trapped arm)

That is not why Marcelo lifts the elobw high. It has nothing to do with sealing off the neck, as you say.

The marcelotine doesn't choke with the V, its the forearm straight across the trachea.

Maybe you should actually know what it is you're talking about, before you start acting an ass.

Yep, because sometimes Marcelo doesn't lift the elbow, if he already had the leg blocking their shoulder. In that case, he says "straight choke from here" and he just drives straight into the trachea, which is what he always does, even when the elbow is high.

It's nothing like a triangle choke at all.

The forearm across the trahea is the main reason I think he marcelotine gets a quicker tap than a standard guillotine, it hurts like hell lol

well say why then because the elbows lifting up creates the V to close any room between arms and neck and then he is chopping up which applies direct pressure to adam's apple area, you lift elbows to tighten, please explain what is correct when questioning someone or it can make a debate difficult to understand

also i understand very well this isnt a blood choke but creating the V closes any holes for room to allow the opponent time to escape, and yeah ill probably check out mginaction, i just hate registering for trials and i really dont like to learn from videos unless i can roll with someone right then and there

yeah i know it is an air choke the chopping upward on the adams apple is what selas the deal but the V keeps even "tough guys" from hanging on

sorry if my triangle choke comparison was misleading with my actual understanding of the choke to be honest the V is more of a U with the bottom of the U applying the pressure

so general opinion says for long skinny arms the power gullitine (rnc grip) is best? Not sure what the prayer choke version is.

I got the long skinny arms...when I do hit guillotines, which isn't very often, it's normally a power guillotine from half guard or standing. I'm much taller than most my weight, so I can get sick leverage standing.
