Power Guillotine vs Elbow Up Guillotine

u guys do know marcelo's guillotine is just a guillotine done properly, it's not like he created it, he just does regualr ole guillotine's well

This is a really interesting thread, I had to watch as many videos as I could find on each version and I have to say that they all have there place, but the power guillotine is definitely to the advantage of long armed people.

He may not have been the first to use the high-elbow guillotine, but he certainly brought it to people's attention, and he's the only person with almost 10 of them in the world's most prestigious grappling tournament. Nothing wrong with associating it with him.

why even call it high elbow, is there a low elbow guillotine?

Yes, here's a good example:

I'm not sure you know what we're talking about here if you can't see the difference with Marcelo's version

While Marcelo may not have invented the high elbow guillotine, it is absolutely not the same as the traditional guillotine that the majority of us have been taught when we first started bjj.

This guy has spent a lot of time at Marcelo's. He knows the deal.

Because the elbow is high with the forearm shelved on the shoulder in order to prevent the opponent from driving in their shoulder to close the space, shutting down your room to choke. It also allows for you to choke them once they pass to the "correct" side, and also helps your more easily ride the choke into the mount or side control to finish.

If you watched closely you noticed that the Korean Zombie went for the power guillotine twice in his fight against Porier.

those are guillotine's, yes... but they aren't as higher % so basically those are guillotine's u could do better and dont even deserve to be distinguished as a different type of guillotine. Like Joe Daddy in that pic went deep with his arm so now he limits his leverage, yes you can finish but the finish is slower and a really tough guy could probably flex his neck and still hang on. If you wanna talk like a smart guy then explain why those guillotines are even good, you need to get into the technical details. Kron in that picture for how sick he is could have used better technique and even after that adcc, because i was training at his school after that adcc admitted he could have done the guillotine better and possibly finished marcelo if he could have got his elbows higher... so yeah drew why u posting a pic of a guillotine that didnt even get a finish, do you guys know what ur talking about i wonder??

please explain the details behind this low elbow guillotine because to me that means you are squeezing, which is wrong and gives the neck space as opposed to making a guillotine chopping motion with elbows high.

the reason your elbows go up because you are trying to close every gap possible and be as tight around the neck as possible while chopping upward. So unlike all these pics posted, you can do a guillotine the right way, what you guys call the marcelotine, opponent goes sleep in couple seconds, not some dude trying to muscle out and then realize he's falling asleep 10-15 seconds later which could be by the time his buddies come by and start kicking your head

i dont think you know how to guillotine buddy :P

In these pictures. What prevents the defender from pressing the elbow down or threading it through and breaking the grip?

all those guillotines can be escaped because they are being done in a less efficient way, for one, kron's guillotine wasnt even a guillotine, if he could get his elbows up then yes, joe daddy's requires alot of power, good luck to him if dude escapes, he better squeeze the shit out of that, good thing he has all those muscles, the only guillotine u should ever go for is this high elbow one that i call a guillotine, if u have bad position like kron joe daddy and bleach hair dude then you better be better than the other person. With a proper guillotine a white belt will tap marcelo, if a white belt tried joe daddy's version against marcelo then yeah good luck with that

and defender would want to reach over the back just like defending a standing guillotine, this will buy him time and with enough shoulder pressure he could even get a choke himself

so yeah drew dont post your pictures of guillotines vs improvised guillotines ive been training long enough to know better

VJJ is either a long winded troll or a whitebelt that's learned it all.

Okay I'll bit, but only once. Often with the guillotine, beginners are taught to close the guard, push away with their legs, and squeeze while arching their back to finish.

I understand why you're just calling Marcelo's a "proper" guillotine, because it is. But unfortunately, most people do not do the guillotine right in that case. That is why people make a distinction.

That's it, cause you either is trolling or know a bunch of stuff and are trying to be difficult.

my exact point, thanks and yeah im not trolling just annoying seeing noobs giving bad technique a name now im outta here all you white belts talk your guillotines

one last point notice how marcelo's opponets are trapped inside a V and the bad technique guillotines you can see the whole side of opponet's neck?? that is called a HOLE and allows someone time, it is called bad technique, simple as that, Power guillotine?? ok sure u go learn those

and since you guys think im such a troll when im just trying to help u understand a guillotine u can "say goodnight to the bad guy" LOLOL

care to explain why i dont know what im talking about? until then ur just talking shit know nothing asshole

No, you're the one talking shit. You're acting like you know everything and everyone else is an idiot, without recognizing that there are two distinct schools of thought on the guillotine.

For Christ's sake, you basically said that Kron had whitebelt BJJ because he went for a standard guillotine. In fact, you say the only reason they do finish it is because they have big muscles. You have less than twenty posts and you're being an obnoxious ass, you're a troll.
