Popular games you just couldn't get into?

Interesting to see witcher 3 and rdr2 mentioned the most.

Witcher just got me by paralysis by analysis. Too much shit. Didnt know what to use, keep, save, etc.

Rdr2, i hated the beginning but once out of the snow, i was in my own world. So much to do, but i knew how to use what i had. I still havent done everything once Mexico opens up because everytime, im bored by then.

Hollow Knight is another repeater and i too couldnt get into it. Not enough shit going on in the beginning to hook me, so i bailed.

Recently, i found myself getting bored at Evil West. The acting sucks and things feel stiff. May tough it out, but im sorry i wasted $ on it.

I have to echo everyone who has said Witcher 3 in here. At one point it seemed that people were foaming at the mouth to describe it as the greatest game ever but that seems to have died down these days. By no means a bad game, but didn't do it for me as 'great' status.
I loved that game, my GOTY in a very strong field in 2015. But I tried playing the next gen update and aside from the production values it has not aged well. The gameplay (combat, traversal, etc.) is atrocious. It was always its weak point but I found it nearly unplayable.

Many as I tend to be picky but most surprisingly for me is the Horizon series on Playstation. I love open world games and dinosaurs are cool but I think those games are trash. Maybe it's because both games were released so close to genre defining games like Breath of the Wild and Elden Ring. I hate the combat and the art design (even if it's technically impressive). The "exploration" is completely fucked. I don't expect every game to be BOTW where you can climb everything (which I find a little ridiculous honestly) but in Horizon Aloy can't climb onto waste high rocks half the time unless there's a glowing yellow carabiner.

I didn't like the new God of Wars (never played one prior). I already dont care for story driven games, occasionally one will be good enough to grab my attention like The Last of Us but I need some decent gameplay to pull me in too. I didn't like the combat in GoW, felt heavy and unresponsive. The repetitive enemies. And I absolutely hate the go where we tell you and do what we tell you when we tell you to do it "gameplay." If you can get invested in the story enough to play an interactive experience like that please enjoy, but it's not for me.

I don't know how long you expect buzz to last, but I suspect the reason people don't feel the need to insist on it is that it has achieved what we typically accept as a "universal" regard for this truth. Most meaningfully, you can see this when put into the context of an entire decade with the cream of the crop critics polled with that specific question (part 2 in the below link), and not just the mean score of reviews when a game comes out that are often little more than fluffed up advertising with a slew of nobodies counted (part 1 in the below link).
BEST VIDEO GAMES OF THE DECADE (2010-19)

Witcher 3 ranks #3 according to the more meaningful of those measurements.

God of War

Souls games. I actually don't hate I just think there often the same.

Third in a decade is quite a big step down from greatest game of all time as some have said before. And I'm certainly not saying it's bad. I think it's particularly interesting that it is just above Skyrim in that list. It felt to me at the time that some people were looking at those two games as being similar but Skyrim was a buggy mess for casuals whereas Witcher 3 was for "true gamers". Again, not an accusation levelled at anyone here, I wasn't discussing games on here back in the 2010s.
On the subject of buzz lasting, you'll still find people willing to argue to the death that SM64 or Ocarina of Time are the greatest games ever. Maybe it's a Nintendo thing.

Careful. Dizzy will go ape shit on you. He would fuck that story based game.
Buddy, your dick might fit in the disc hole but don’t assume that of everyone else.

Breath of the Wild

Tried a few times but I just never cared to play it.

If you're able to think about the topic of GOAT within the context of judging the game based on how good it was at the time it was released there's absolutely an argument for Ocarina of Time or Mario 64 to be the greatest. Ocarina is my favorite game of all time, would I choose to play it over Breath of the Wild today if I had to pick? No, of course newer games are subjectively "better," but it's narrow minded to just say they're better because they're new.

Many of favorite iterations of games are from earlier on; Resident Evil 1, Metal Gear Solid 1, Grand Theft Auto Vice City. They've all had modern sequels that were great but none were able to top those experiences in my opinion.

Any GTA after 3
Any Final Fantasy after 6

Once those games started incorporating more cutscenes and I didn't have to use my imagination as much I didn't find them as interesting

Diablo 2

Admittedly I got into the series with 3 when it came out on PS3, and that's what I got used to. I played the shit out of 3 and I do still boot it up sometimes but I just can't get into 2.

Dishonored.

GTA & RDR series
It's weird because I liked Sleeping Dogs, Bully and LA Noire but, in those games, the tasks seemed more unique even if not related to the main story. They were also a lot less reliant in a driving system that I didn't find intuitive. Witcher games have similar issues along with an over-reliance on crafting progression but is a little more tolerable.

<45> Should i respond to this childish shit via "i know you are but what am i?"

I must have tried three or four different Resident Evil games over the years going back to the PS1 days the most recent being 7. I like the horror genre but they just didn't do anything for me.

MGSV This game is just a bizarre to me. Credits rolling every five minutes, incredibly long cut scenes, boring empty levels, ridiculous gameplay mechanics and almost zero story unless you want to listen to hours of audio tapes.

I have the same feeling about Resident Evil & Metal Gear Solid games. I don't like serious games with goofy elements. The balloon thing where you send soldiers to sky just totally breaks the immersion for me in MGSV. Resident Evil Village had awesome gameplay but all the villains were more comical than scary which I hated.

Any of the "metroidvania" games like Ori, Hollow Knight or Moonscars. Just not my thing.
The first Metal Gear Solid is one of my favourite games of all time, it was the first time I played a game with such an emotional, engaging story.
The second was a massive disappointment, third was ok but fourth I couldn't really get into.
The fifth felt like it had nothing to do with the series at all.

God of War and SkyRim.

Something about the control system didn't gel for me. From memory, it was using the trigger for melee weapons that just really threw me off.

It is always resident evil. I think it's because I played it as a little kid and I got scared. I have all the remakes but I never really played it.

Lol now I think about it, this is probably subconsciously the reason I couldnt get into the RE series either. The first game gave me nightmares as a kid, same as Silent Hill.

For me it was Shadow of the Colossus, rated super high everywhere but the actual gameplay is dog shit. I finished it out of stubbornness but wouldnt reccomend it to anyone or touch it again.

Surprised by all the Witcher 3 comments, just played the next gen update (had not played before) and got lost in it. So many great stories, characters, and so much good lore. I did most of the sidequests and all the hunts on top of the main story and thought most of it was great.

Then again, Im sure some people would think i am crazy for hating Shadow of the Colossus. Taste in games is subjective.
