International Pope Francis has died

Outside of tradition doesn’t necessarily equate to heresy though.

Now I am not a Catholic, so is the “Amoris Laetitia issue” the controversy about whether divorcees could take communion? Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t that a rather recent tradition (like 19th century) anyhow?

The “all paths” remark reminds me of the early church father Bishop Clement of Alexandria. He said “truth is a river with tributaries on all sides,” and he was venerated as a saint from his death in the early 3rd century until like, the 17th century.

It’s interesting what traditions take hold to such a degree they sort of become a dogma.

Yup, and Sola Scriptura guys don't even make any serious effort to understand the Bible.

Its like picking some law books and claiming all judges are heretics for using precedence and context in their rulings.

By the mere virtue of being the Pope he can't be an heretic.
Lol sure he can. what if they elect a dude and he immediately start saying that "starting today we worship my underwear". the pope can have heretical views what are you talking about.

RIP Francis. As Pope’s go he was actually very “Christ Like” in his acceptance of the poor and disenfranchised. I hope they don’t replace him with some reactionary that’s going to undo the last 50 years of progress the Church has desperately needed.
Someone that would solve the problems of the poors using guns instead of acceptance has espresse her satisfaction ..

Grew up Lutheran and currently non denominational so clueless regarding catholic policies, how do they choose a new pope? Is it a vote from the cardinals? Is there a vice pope already in line?
Power slap tournament sponsored by Corn Nuts, the official corn nuts sack of the Vatican.

I've never quite understood how the catholics reconcile papal policy changing with different popes, aren't the popes supposed to have a direct line to god? So then does God himself change his mind with each new pope?

Simple version: Catholic doctrine is the Pope is infallible on Church Business.

There is an explanation for this (beyond God changing his position) but it's pretty complicated and I never forced my way through to understanding it fully. The Pope's infallibility has some limits, and checks and balances involving other Church VIPs accepting what he says, and whether it is considered divinely revealed or not, etc.. Perhaps @ReligiousDiscipline can explain.

Papal supremacy is a dogma. If the Pope were to establish that the worship of his underwear as a Papal decree then yeah, it wouldn't be heretical.

You have to understand that the church works like a judicial body, in fact the Catholic Church is where most modern legal doctrines originate from.

So the Pope is like the SCOTUS, they are the ultimate authority in matters of what is Canon Law.

"God works in mysterious ways"

How do protestants reconcile the fact that their "holy book" was compiled by the Catholic Church like 300-400 years after Jesus died?
