[POLL] Who Should be Islam's First Defense?

Islam First Title Defense?

Now, I voted Morales because I truly feel like he deserves a shot the most. That's also an interesting fight stylistically, especially when you add in some unknowns like how Morales' ground game and cardio will hold up against a grappling beast like Islam and how will Islam fair against the biggest, most physical WW we've seen in the division since Rumble occasionally made 170 fifteen years ago. A good case can be made for Garry as well, and if he got the nod you couldn't get THAT choked about it. Obviously Shavkat would be getting the nod but his knee seems to have exploded and he's apparently never going to recover for it so that option's out. It's already been noted that Prates took an L way too recently to get the next shot, although injuries happen and him subbing in wouldn't be the end of the world by any means, even if I'm pretty sure Islam would 50-45 him. Buuuuutttttttttt.....

Kamaru Usman has a recent win against Buckley who has been on an absolute roll since coming to 170 and he did it quite impressively. The 5th round was a bit dodgy but that was because Buckley came in in extreme condition and was finally able to cut loose a bit, but even then Kamaru was able to weather that storm from one of the most dangerous strikers in the division after 4 hard rounds of grappling where he absolutely dominated. Style-wise, Kamaru might just be the hardest test for Islam. Think about it; Islam has the wrestling and grappling advantage over pretty much every fighter south of 170... but not Kamaru. He won't be able to spam single legs into doubles into slams into cage rides into slams into an RNC as he's so fond of doing. I truly don't think he can take Kamaru down, Usman's cardio is bullet-proof (he did slow down a bit in his last fight I will acknowledge, but he hadn't fought in quite some time and he was nowhere near gassed), and his boxing is still on point. He's one of maybe three fighters I can see who could take Islam down and control him there and he's far bigger to boot. People bring up the videos of him being carried down stairs and the stories of his knees being completely shot, but we haven't really seen that play out in his fights. He's pushing 39 but he's still got a lot left in the tank based off of what I've seen from him, he has a big time name and that ex-champ aura, and the more I talk about this the more convinced I am that Dana will give Kamaru one last kick at the can and I'm kinda alright with it. It's a damn interesting fight if nothing else.

The WW division right now is insanely stacked right now and I'm loving it!

To reiterate though, Morales deserves the shot the most.

I get hating Garry's fighting style. I'm not a fan of it myself.

And if we are getting rid of boring fighting styles and stripping Khamzat Chimaev of the title, then I'm all for it.

"Fighting" isn't about who makes you all giddy like a 12yo Justin Bieber fan. It's about one man imposing his will over another. Not being able to appreciate how someone like Hamzat or Habib make their opponents look like unranked amateurs tells me you are probably better served by watching WWE and having a few corn dogs at the mall, instead of pontificating on "boring fighting styles".

Another dumb fuckin take from the 2 second attention span generation. Go play call of duty or something.

Rakhmonov being on a domonik cruz level injury, garry is the "deserving" match.
i just dont see garry stopping the takedown and inevitable tapout via squeeze.
i honestly think usman has a more realistic chance for the win.
morales could maybe get the upset win via some kind of wild combo for the crack ko. but idk.
ilia isnt welterweight so how is that a defense?
prates beating edwards, who was on a 2 fight skid, and having already lossed to garry = no.

welterweight is stale right now. sit on the belt till an undeniable contender emerges. but to stay active. i think islam should drop back down and fight ilia for the honor. even if catchweight.

Voted for Usman only because I really hope to see Usman win or make a competitive fight like he did with Khamzat.

Morale still has room for improvement, there could be a time him developed into “Max with punching power”.

I don't like the guy but I voted Garry - Morales is good too but he's only beaten Sean Brady whereas Garry has fought so many of the best WWs

People actually saying Morales deserves it more than Garry o_O

Morales has one really good win, Sean Brady
Besides that he’s had a bunch of Paddy Pimblett type fights, mostly washed up vets

I voted Usman thinking I would be the only one, apparently not. Why all the Usman hate ladies and gentlemen?

Garry or Morales is acceptable. I lean Garry, despite his loss to Shavkat (only decision of Shavkat's career), bc Garry's wins are a little better.

Usman should be an afterthought. That they'd even consider that fight is insulting, and let's us know what the UFC thinks of its fans.
Bobby hello there, why is this fight is so insulting?

Morales and Garry should be the only options, not for your poll but for good matchmaking from the UFC. I prefer Morales and think he's more deserving but wouldn't mind Garry getting a shot. Prates needs 1 more win, Marty can fuck off.
Agreed either.

I think we'll get 40 year old Usman and then a final retirement match for Islam.

I'm sorry but you have to look beyond wins.
Garry's last 4:
-MVP: Garry basically gets lit up on the feet, grapples like his life depends on it, barely gets the backpack in 3rd round or would've lost the fight.
-Shavkat: Garry loses by getting wall and stalled by Shavkat.
-Prates: Domininant fight than gasses and almost finished by Prates. Many still left impressed more by Prates.
-Belal: Garry was controlled each round, then outstrikes Belal by 3 and 4 punches in round 1 and 3.

Morales' last 4:
- Matthews: Morales keeps it standing and comfortably wins a decision, took the last round off a little but won that too.
- Magny: 1st round tko
- Burns: 1st round tko
- Brady: 1st round tko.

Garry has the better resume overall for the division, but I don't like to write off losses or close fights. So on paper Garry should get it, but Morales looks like the biggest killer in the division.
