Law Police Boxing Training Death: UPDATE - ACLU Involved

No one should ever be getting knocked out cold in a training session. It happens, but it should be consciously avoided.

They stressed that if you weren’t giving it your all and instead, are dancing around or running, it would be bad for them. I didn’t even try to knock him out, but I have heavy hands and have just always hit hard even when not swinging. The guy hit me pretty good knocking out my contact and I hit him back with a jab and it was over.

Academies do these boxing or combat trainings for several reasons-to weed out the weak, but more importantly, the entertainment factor. They just want to see a good fight. I never even saw or felt me connect with him, so I don’t know how hard threw it, but they needed smelling salts to wake him up. It’s also a lot of fun for the cadets. Guys were picking their opponents and talking shit for weeks. No one picked me to fight and no one wanted the country boy with big power in his hands. I was told many times “that dude is going to knock you out and he hits really hard.” I wasn’t going to get into an argument or debate or start bragging. I just said that I liked my chances and I had been doing mma since 97 and kickboxing from 2001 and this fight was 2003.

It's one of those things that sounds like a good idea to anyone who hasn't trained any martial arts in their life. If you have you know right away that without proper guidance it will quickly spin out of control with guys just trying to KO each other.

I wasn’t out to knock anyone out, but I knew it was highly likely that it would happen. I had been doing mma since 97 and kickboxing 2001-2003 with a guy that trained at rob kamman’s gym in holland. This fight was 2003. I threw one jab and he was out. I don’t think I threw it very hard either

These sound like unsanctioned fights. And unsanctioned fights literally get people killed. There's not even a logical reason to do this considering the PAL is well-regarded with USA Boxing and I've been part of many events where Civil servants have bouts against each other. Sheriff's Deputies vs Fire Department.

I dunno it doesn’t even say what he died of. Brain trauma? Heart attack?

They don't know yet.
Right that’s why I’m saying no one can answer your question.

Could be unsafe practices. People do die from it from time to time in poorly run boxing gyms. Could be the dude had an undiagnosed heart condition. That happens too

Let me just say that I'm not invested in this incident even though I started the thread. One reason I did is to get the views of people who know about boxing.

Before coming over here, I read thread after thread over at Reddit crying that it looks like an intentional beatdown. They are citing some LAPD incident where a recruit was suspected of being spy. Notice how the ACLU is chiming in.

Glad to see Sherdoggers exhibiting a sober attitude backed by experience and knowledge. Have a beer on me guys!

I don’t think they do it anymore. This was 2002

- That's is pretty stupid. In a street situation at work, a guy with krokodil or some type of meth, can take a unfantomable deal of punish. And some people just can take more punishment naturally. The footwork is far more impoirtant than turning the cadets brain in smashed baby food.
