Poatan's Ego Trip: How Fame Led to His Downfall

I asked Grok what it thought of the post, you pass the test:

So, my take? It could be AI, especially if generated by a model like me with up-to-date knowledge and a knack for casual tone. But it doesn’t scream AI—no robotic repetition, no overly perfect grammar, no weird tangents that miss the mark. It feels like a pissed-off MMA fan who’s been stewing on Pereira’s loss and typed this in one go. I’d lean 60-40 toward human, just because the vibe’s so authentically salty and context-specific without feeling engineered.

Yo, let's talk about Poatan's recent stumble. It's clear the dude let fame mess with his head. He was all over social media, dropping training camp videos like they were mixtapes, showing off every move. Instead of keeping his eyes on the prize, he was out here chatting about fantasy matchups, even calling out Usyk in boxing. It's like he thought he was invincible.

And that "CHAMA" catchphrase? He pushed it so hard that it became a thing everywhere, turning him into some kind of legend. When everyone treats you like a myth, it's easy to start believing the hype. His style got flashier too—rocking that champion vibe with bold outfits, making grand entrances, and even wearing an indigenous headdress with face paint at weigh-ins. All that showboating? Seems like he forgot that the real battle is in the cage.

Then there's the $200k bet he tried to set up with Ankalaev, acting like he couldn't be touched. And to top it off, Bruce Buffer introduced him as "The One and Only" before the fight. That kind of ego boost can mess with your focus. When you're more about the spotlight than the grind, you're setting yourself up for a fall. Poatan got caught up in the hype, and it cost him. He lost that humility that got him to the top in the first place.
You don't know shit about him.

hes almost 40, his legacy is established in two sports. he wants to enjoy life. it's the same kind of mentality cyril gane has.

All I know is wall and stall needs to be banned. Joe Rogan and Daniel Cormier are absolutely fucking idiots on this topic.

MMA is not a real fight. A real fight involves weapons, broken glass, eye gouges, groin shots, etc. Real fights don't have referees or time limits. MMA needs to stop having this pretense that it's a "real fight".

Once you accept that, you realize that we need rules to balance sport vs entertainment. Referees should be given yellow/red cards to hand out, and wall and stall should get cards. You should be REQUIRED to either get a takedown or disengage. Rabbit punches don't cut it.

Refs should be separating fighters against the cage with no takedown after 1 minute max. If a fighter then repeatedly forces wall and stall positions, they should be handed yellow cards to subtract points. Red cards if they keep ignoring the yellow cards. Until we have this, clowns like Ankalaev will continue to abuse the MMA rules to win boring fights.
Add knees and kicks to grounded opponents (and headbutts if I'm to have my cherry on top) and I'm in.

I definitely agree that he took it too easy this camp, he was doing a lot of traveling and videos, which takes a toll on you. If he wasn't sleeping well either, then that would just add to it. Like Chael pointed out, Alex missed something like 14 training sessions when he was out and about doing social media stuff, and that adds up, especially when it's someone who's almost 40l.

I don't see a downfall. He lost a decision in an uneventful fight to a guy that many figured was his toughest match-up in the division. It's not like he got humiliated, dominated and knocked out.

It's MMA, people are going to lose eventually.

Alex is a great kickboxer but he was exposed when his finally fought a well rounded MMA fighter in Ank instead of a tailor made sloppy brawler or a pure striker

Ank was right when he said that Alex needed to stopping running away from him, Alex was running away from him in the fight as well

Sean, Izzy, Khalil, Hill, Jiri..... They don't wrestle at all or Sean rarely does. Alex has basically fought pure strikers & sloppy brawlers during his UFC run. Wasn't getting that against Ank

He lost a close decision that many thought he won.

I will say that he should not be doing so much 'other' things while in camp. A trip to Australia mid-camp is not a good thing.

He needs to bring in the Feliz brothers next camp to work on his countering - his countering, footwork and timing were off the charts in his prior camp (for the rountree fight) when he had Fernly Jr. in his fight camp.

These tears are delicious.

Sherdog has AI now lol

hunger for success and money is the key, when the hunger is filled the fall begins

downfall? he lost a close fight and his belt but will likely get an immediate shot at revenge. thats no downfall.
