Poatan MW title aging very well

How do you think Izzy rocked and KOd Poatan?

There was less oxygen in his brain

Massive weight cut = glass chin

Do you know why Islam ducked Toppy?

Well, Islam struggles to make 155 and Toppy is a hard hitter

This was long suspected.

Still boggles the mind how a guy who admittedly walks around ~230 lbs could ever get down that low in weight.

He could have had worse health issues then just that KO if he stayed there any longer.

I mean

He fought with a big disadvantage - severe dehydration

He didn't cut weight as a challenge for himself, he cut weight because he wanted the size advantage. To try to make it sound like the former is pretty ridiculous, even for Sherdog.

Thats like 9/10 fighters on any division in modern day MMA, he wasnt the only MW to fight well above 200lbs on fight night, at LHW he is probably the closest to his peak form.

Today we can see Poatan is a natural HW

How does that cause his MW wins to age well? I thought the prevailing logic here was that if you fight people smaller than you, it's a strike against you, not something that should be praised.

The only thing that aged well here is Adesanya's win over Pereira.

He's a big LHW so he was certainly a very big MW, certainly weighing more than Adesanya normally does. If he wasn't bigger than anyone at MW then the post I replied to makes even less sense since then he's as dehydrated as everyone else and there's nothing notable about it whatsoever.

Great fighter but I don't know if I'm very keen on applauding huge weight cuts. It's not really the kind of achievement that makes the sport better in my view. You also don't cut to make things a challenge for you, you're doing it to have a size advantage if you're that big.

It's really the least compelling part of his UFC run imo.

In his case I think it was somewhat necessary.

His storyline with Izzy is the entire reason he was able to speed run to the title shot and then his entire championship tier run at LHW.

He was too old to "work his way up" like a traditional fighter would and the risk of encountering a bad matchup was too big vs the potential upside should he face Israel and win, which he did.

If he came straight into LHW he is just a regular schmuck at that point. He just played the hand he was dealt. It doesn't mean you have to be impressed or value that weight cut, just that there was pretty solid reasoning behind that choice from which he has benefitted to the tune of millions and millions of dollars.

Naturally, going way below your natural weight is a disadvantage otherwise there wouldn't be a point of weight classes. Brock Lesnar probably can't beat BJ Penn at 155....

He went to 185 because he knew he could get a title shot against Israel because of their history in kickboxing. He had already outgrown 185 in Glory.

Not that Israel is a hard hitter, but he's still a high level kickboxer, def can't just swarm him like that.

Ank on the other hand is also not that hard of a hitter but doesn't have anywhere near the skill of Izzy. It makes a lot of sense that Poatan showed no respect and just decided to run him over. I think the fact that he knew Ank can't take him down this time greatly freed up his offense.
He also had the element of surprise vs Ank, nobody was expecting him to rush like that. While in the first Izzy fight Poatan was super aggresive so Izzy was even rehearsing the exact right hand counter on the fence sequence in training.
