Plyometric or Explosive Legs?

Am I the only one that isn't a fan of squat jumps with a barbell? I'd suggest jumps with a Hex bar instead.

No fucking way I'd do jump squats either. I've do stuff with bands, chains, and explosive box squats before I'd jump.

so i cant do anything right not but improve timing and accuracy, and probably the technique as well...but really, i do the step on instinct, i was never taught how to do it, maybe the way i do it kinda slows it down

You can get more explosive in 35 days. I do plyometrics and sprints no problem. I train agility. I train light weights explosively. I train my abs, back core. You will get more explosive doing all that. They work for me and I don't do powerlifting anymore. So you don't have to do it by the book and have a huge squat or anything. That's my opinion.

Given the numbers you shared a few days ago, even when you were "doing powerlifting" you weren't doing it very well. I am not saying that as a slight; merely an observation that the numbers you shared show that you were probably not following a decent strength program, and thus anything you deduce from that doesn't really apply to a decent strength program.

I will be the first around here to tell you that powerlifting is not the only way to increase power and power endurance for sports. However, having a decent strength base indubitably helps with developing power and "explosiveness."

You have a very low strength base. I highly recommend following a proper strength routine from the faq before adding explosive movements. You won't get much benefit from them until then.

Educate yourself about strength training, and pick a program.

Just saw your body-shots form vid over in stand-up. Your technique is okay. But in my opinion, to improve your boxing you need to focus on technique, then strength, then explosive work in that order.

Keep up the good work. Had any fights yet?

yeah, i use to forget about technique but i focus all on technique now, cuz even if i have power and speed and everything, without technique and timing it wont hit. nope, no fights yet

I agree with you. No offense taken. Me and my brother did the best we could with the powerlifting knowledge we had at the time. We had no instruction. But doing the things I mentioned are doable right now cause he doesn't have much time. I think 35 days to his fight. The types of things I mentioned will make him more explosive come fight night. That and just being in shape, cardio and sparring is the best he can do for now probably. And if he is in good shape, quicker, explosive, technical, beats his opponent to the punch. On an amateur level you could probably beat a lot of guys in boxing. I felt some were making this guy think he had to take up powerlifting 35 days before the fight. and telling him he could do no plyometrics until then. I think he should incorporate some plyos now. I think that learning powerlifting would waste a lot of his time right now. He should be doing other things now . If he's gonna take up lifting, I'd do that well before fight night and not so close to it.

i see what your saying, its kickboxing tho, not boxing, thats another disadvantage for me, everyone have long legs in my class and i have the short ones, its no choice for me but to focus on getting inside, knees, body shots, overhooks, then yeah, we'll see what happens

If I was you I would mostly work on my technique and timing, the fight is a little too soon for anything else to work properly. After your fight get on a good routine, work your strength and then you can start doing plyos and whatnot...

I don't disagree with most of that. While a novice could actually see decent strength gains in 35 day period, I don't think that would be particularly useful in preparation for a boxing match. Technique and conditioning work should be paramout.

no more need to continue planning lol, fight isnt in 35 days, its next week, coach just told me, however, i feel more relaxed now

Yeah as a beginner, you can get stronger pretty quick. And If you had your hands on this guy I wouldn't doubt you could do it. There always is a learning curve with something new especially when you're learning it on your own without instruction from someone like yourself or other guys on here. I was thinking there was a good chance it could take away from what he would be better off doing that late in the game. Depends on the hours in a day that he can train something too.

i can train all day 24/7, time isnt really the trouble, the trouble is what to do with the time

You don't have a job?

i'm 15, and due to problems in egypt, streets arnt safe, so schools gave us permission to stay home, so i dont have anything to do this year but workout, workout, workout, and perhaps workout

So it's too dangerous to go o school or a job, but not too dangerous to go to the gym or fights.

The Canadians ruined your country. I am sorry.

Canadians ruined our country? O.o

A word to the wise here. When it comes to combat sports especially. And generally any sport that isnt weightlifting. Absolute strength is nowhere near as important as the ability to exert maximal force quickly. This is why plyometrics are useful. Explosive power is my forte and if anyone needs advice feel free to pm me

So the ability to exert maximal force quickly isn't important in weightlifting now?
