Pliny Petes Luchastravaganza Thread

I marked the fuck out for the Dario comeback. He's the greatest thing in wrestling today. I love the idea of him controlling the temple again and having his brother just murdering fools that try to fuck with his house.

The storylines in Aztec Warfare were great.. some legitimate surprises and they did a great job of making Rey Rey a big deal, which he is.. but his time in WWE recently made me forget.

Can't wait for the Mil vs Pentagon feud.

...and Jack Evans doesn't give a fuck.

LU does an amazing job of making its villains feel ... well, cinematic is the term that comes to mind. When they had Mil sitting on his throne watching the matches, someone else mentioned it felt like Shao fucking Khan from Mortal Kombat. And after like every match people would call the champ out and he'd be sitting up there fuming.

They're a (relatively) small company but they make their fictional world seem huge and the stakes important. Storyline events having lasting impact / general consistency is a huge part of that. Big Ryck wore the eyepatch permanently after he got burned. They permanently killed off the Bael character. WWE doesn't feel high-stakes because nothing matters. Say Shane wins control of WWE at 'Mania ... nothing's gonna really look different the next day. 'Taker would eventually be back despite getting "fired". Or say 'Taker wins and Vince's debt to Shane is called off ... nothing looks different the next day.

In LU, when Mil took over the temple, the very damn arena reflected the champion's presence. With Dario / Matanza back in control, I actually am anticipating what this means for the show next week. I have a feeling we're going to see at least one more character permanently killed off.

And, shit, Sexy Star's storyline this season. They would never have their top damn female star get storyline kidnapped - with implications she was raped - and basically turn into a PTSD-addled mess. Which I wish WWE would have the balls to do, as they have the reach / resources to do some good work for real-life victims of abuse after they raise awareness of their plights through the mainstream media attention I guarantee that storyline would get if WWE did it.

I don't get how WWE just doesn't get that you can cater to casual fans just by telling a good, consistent story. Even people who don't like wrestling for wrestling's sake will tune in every single week if you give them characters they can relate to - and are given reasons to relate to them - and if the storylines ... well, actually are storylines. When Fenix cut that promo talking about what his mask meant to him I'm pretty sure I teared up, because it felt so damn real. He was talking about his actual life - growing up and feeling like an outsider in the real world, so he decided to live in the only world that made sense to him - a world where he doesn't have to hide who he is (ironically, by wearing a mask) and he can do fantastic things that leave people in awe. He chose to be reborn as something larger than the petty demands of the small-minded people around him. Just his damn name and one piece of clothing he wears, tells so much more story (both about his character and about the performer) than any full damn year in the "story" of any WWE character. Which we got from one promo.

Rasslin' tv needs to be dragged into modernity, and hopefully LU is successful enough that the other companies can't ignore what they're doing anymore.

Matanza finisher is slick.

This dude looks like he knows what he's doing. He's appealing to modern fans but I think he would have fit in well in the classic american rasslin' bruisers era. I mean, most of his moveset is actually meat and potatoes grappling, but he does it with such athleticism that it looks like we're getting something completely different rather than just the same thing with new packaging. Like, that finisher of his ... it's a powerslam. Even the fact that he spins the opposite way than most is not unique. I'm pretty sure Michael Tarver was doing that on the first season of NXT (back when it had the reality competition gimmick). Found it:

But Matanza / Jeff Cob ... I dunno man, he makes it feel like he's fucking bending time/space itself the way he reverses his opponents momentum for the slam. Same for that twisting backdrop.

This guy might be a household name in a few years. I don't see how WWE doesn't sign him. I mean, yeah, he's gonna look a ton smaller in WWE and will have to modify his moveset against bigger guys (we'll see to what extent) but he's still gonna put on great matches and make a ton of money doing it, so.

Okay good, just watched the Aztec Warfare 2 and came here to talk about Matanza. See he's being discussed a bit here already. Dude is nuts! Watched some of his other highlight videos and whatnot and the guy can do some impressive shit.

You couldn't be more right when it comes to Matanza. The slam in this video looks nothing like the way Matanza does it. When I saw it for the first time I felt a reaction that I had never seen the move before, and it's just a reverse powerslam. My non wrestling fan of a roommate was in awe of what he was doing in the ring. He actually started watching LU with me, and skips out on WWE when I have it on.

Great opening segment.

I dont like where theyve taken Marty The Moth as a character but I still appreciate the effort theyre putting into a lower mid card guy
Wish we could say the same about some other leagues

That Marty The Moth segment was awesome..

Marty still lower mid-card guy, they're making Mariposa out to be a real bad bitch. She is getting that push, brother.

Man, sometimes its hard to get into a match with LU b/c of the post production/lack of hard camera. Lots of cuts.

oh well, it is still super entertaining.

Oh shit Vampiro is confronting Matanza.

I'm ok with no hard camera.... and their camera work is better than this shit.

Sometimes they do have weirdly timed cut aways though.

.

I mean, you're not wrong w/ the shakey zoom camera and crap, but sometimes its hard to get into a flow of a match with the cuts. And I swear at one point in Matanza/PJ there was like three cuts <5 seconds. Usually their production is very good though.

I like the simultaneous nerf to Matanza + buff to Pentagon

Matanza is OP lol

I was hoping for more with Pentagon and matanza.

It's nice that matanza will be active though

I've complained about their camera work this season, before. Angles / cuts / whatever should be used to enhance the sense of movement, not detract from it. There should never be a cut during a dive that doesn't make it look higher / farther. They've done some bizarre cuts that literally cut out parts of moves to the point you don't know how someone got laid out or whatever.

I get they want it to look more like an action movie, but they could focus the cuts on the backstage segment fights / and during matches when they brawl on the outside.

Oh, and about Matanza: did anyone catch kinda near the beginning when he was fumbling with his mask, and you could see it was partly coming undone, and then later it was back on ?

And also it's pretty clear they nerfed his power level from last week - when we didn't see anything wrong with his mask.

I'm really hoping that was intentional and not just, you know, a random thing. As in, that his power is tied with his mask - either literally, or just that the distraction / focus on it is what kept him from just running through Pentagon (one guy) as opposed to when he ran through like a dozen guys last week.
