The skid Yan had is probably part of it. It'd definitely be a good one, but idk if Fig deserves a shot over him. Cody, Font and Chito just don't seem like as good as a win over Sandhagen.

Yan hasn't destroyed anyone since he fought Aldo in 2020. Worst case scenario for Umar is a competitive fight where his grappling and speed on the feet lets him dictate the pace and direction of a fight. Silly to Umar like an untested can crusher when he just went toe to toe with the third highest ranked BW and won.

when umar was begging for his first ranked opponent, and when yan was on his skid, I think that was the best time for the match up.

Somehow umar got sandhagen though.

I've wanted to see that fight for a long time. For some reason it gets talked about very rarely as a potential match up

I think it's b/c of what Merab did to Yan. He made Yan look old and washed. For me, seeing Yan controlled to that degree lessened my excitement for Yan/Umar.

But man it might just be that the Merab's and the Belal's of the world have weaponized cardio to such an extent that they make good/great fighters look flat out awful.

Why on Earth would we get an exciting, amazing fight like Umar vs Merab and then there be a backlash to it in the form of a bunch of dumb threads saying they shouldn't make the fight that is by far the best, most exciting, and most intriguing.

be rational: umar is ranked because he won one fight against a ranked guy, and he was given that fight because of his name. he’s got 6 fights total in ufc. in the time since umar has been in the ufc, fig has won four fights against ranked guys, including three at umar’s weight class, and a title fight at the weight class below. meanwhile every one of umar’s opponents besides cory has been unranked, including two guys making ufc debut, and a guy with a losing record in ufc.

if umar is so good, he can beat another ranked opponent to prove it. frankly, that would still be a fast tracked title shot, so he’d have nothing to complain about. making fig defeat 4 ranked opponents is absurd, especially given that he’s a recent champ from another division.

Umar beat the number 2 guy in the division. Figgy beat the number 5 guy. Sandhagen beat Vera more impressively than Figgy did. Umar is next. He's the betting favorite over the champion and is ranked higher than Figgy.

If Figgy is so good he should prove it by beating someone like Sandhagen or Yan. Umar has already proven how good he is.

There was broad agreement that whoever won that fight deserved the TS considering their levels. Now when Umar wins all of sudden there's a base of support claiming that Figgy deserves the TS. Figgy looked good in his last two fights, but finishing a washed CoGar and getting decisions against declining Font and Vera (did drop him to be fair) isn't exactly screaming "dominant champion" type of performances. He was losing to CoGar as well, who got over-confident and tried to blitz which got him subbed.

Considering how washed he looked at the end of his FLY run it is great to see him with his confidence and cardio back in proper form, but he hasn't styled on anyone in the top 5.

From a "fight fans" perspective there is no more fun/violent fight to make in the division than Figgy vs. Yan, especially if we give it 5 rounds. I could care less about rankings/titles, I just want to see "cool fights" that's why I watch fights in the first place.
