Petr Yan vs Marcus McGhee… why?

I already got in on MM early. I think Yan just made a big mistake tbh.

This fight is akin to Lewis /TT. World thinks Yan gonna walk right through MM. Only to find out, MM walked through Yan.

I watched Marcus vs JP but wasn’t particular impressed

I will watch his match vs Jonathon Martinez

Yan is 2-3 in his last 5.
McGhee is 4-0 in the UFC.

Odd matchmaking, but I'll allow it.

On paper, rankings wise, it doesn't make much sense. But UFC is desperate for more contenders in the BW division.

Sean, Umar, Vera, Fig (injured), Font, Cejudo, none of these guys are in line for an immediate shot. Umar maybe if he wins a fight or two.

Bautista and Cory are the only challenges besides McGhee that Merab hasn't already beat. And Bautista is pretty much not very liked or popular.

That's what I heard,that everyone was booked or not available for the time he wanted to fight

Why

-Yan has lost to 2 of the 3 fighters ranked above him, Umar being ranked ahead of him is a joke thoughbeit.
-He's already beaten the 3 people ranked directly below him.
-Fighting down is the only option for Yan because umar doesn't want to fight. (or hasn't been offered it)
-Cejudo is looking for the easiest fights and would never take this fight, it's a certain loss anyhow. He's rank squatting.
-Font is a journeyman/gatekeeper currently and it's not likely he'll ever break into contention so I dont expect him to fight up much higher.
-Bautista just fought, but that's a reasonable match up
-Vera is on a two fight skid and should be fighting down. (he'll likely face zahabi if i had to guess)

McGhee is the only contender ranked below Yan with any momentum or upward mobility that Yan hasn't fought yet.

O'malley fight is desirable, but makes no sense now. should Yan lose that, A potential title challenger gets derailed. If yan Loses to mcghee, a viable contender emerges. it's a win/win

Matchmaking has been all over the place in the UFC lately.

Said that.. Yan fought pretty much every top BW other than Umar and Chito who is not really a top fighter.

Can't do the Chito fight because it's a fantastic matchup that fans have been calling for for years now.

This should be a very exciting fight based on their styles, just wish it was a five rounder. Honestly have no interest in seeing Yan in 3 rounders based on his style.

They’ve done this many times before with hot prospects who put on exciting finishes to see if they can speedtrack them into the title picture. I just see this as that again.

Yan is so flat footed I can’t see Umar not rag dolling him via wrestling. Whereas I think he will beat McGhee in a firefight, specifically with McGhee gassing.

It's unconventional matchmaking but McGhee has looked great so far and this fight could establish a new contender. Or it could remind people why Yan was a champion.

Yan is damn near washed. Starting to remind me of Woodley toward the end. Feed him to some up and comers . Force him back to form or be journeyman Yan. I like the sound of it. That said I like him

Not washed but likely won’t beat Merab or Umar if they were to fight

Because fighters have personal lives and there are a ton of different factors that go into considering a matchup.
