It's also possible that O'Malley had a rematch clause in his contract, but was injured after the fight. I'm not sure how these things work, but you could argue that if this is true his contract entitles him to a rematch with Merab whether he's champion or not, once O'Malley is healthy.
This is also almost certainly why Strickland was given a rematch with DDP. Even before the fight was signed + announced, Strickland said that fight was "set in stone" and "owed" to him. The way he was talking about it made it sound like he had a guaranteed rematch clause.
But ya, even if there is a rematch clause, I'm sure the UFC didn't argue too hard. They obviously favor O'Malley as well.
