Rabies, which is insanely infectious and almost a hundred percent lethal. If it had rabies and bit him, he could have passed it on to others.
As I said, if he gave a flying fuck about the squirrel he could have had it vaccinated for rabies, but he didn't.
Is it or is it not illegal to house to house a squirrel? If it is, then rail against the law, not the enforcement. That's the rational approach.
You didn't read through the thread since your post before this one, did you?
The rabies excuse was a cover-story, and apart of it was the lie that Peanut bit an officer. Before the raid happened it was decided the squirrel and raccoon were to be conficated and euthanized.
You can harp on about rabies all you like and the risks of animals being exposed, but do you know what other animals are at equal risk of rabies? Dogs and cats. Your same alarmist argument can be used towards the euthanization of almost the entire pet population.
How do you know the squirrel and raccoon weren't vaccinated for rabies?
Its been widely publicized that both are indoor pets, which greatly reduce the chances of rabies infection as compared to wild dogs and stray cats.
And the house and farm were the base of an animal sanctuary, probably with a mobile vet on call to give the animals proper vaccinations.

So, if the state had just contacted the animals owners and asked for the health & vaccination records, this entire situation could have been avoided. If they didn't have the records the state could have required the vaccinations be recorded and turned in.
But that didn't happen, did it?
The state unillaterally decided for the house and farm to be raided, Peanut & Fred were confiscated, and immediately euthanized.
Also, the farm & animal sanctuary were licensed & has a tax ID, as both are displayed on their website. The state already knew about the animal sancturary and Peanut for a very long time before the raid.
