Peak LHW Rumble or Potan?

still trying to discredit certain fighters even after death i see.......

anyway ill say it again. THE THREE GREATEST 205 FIGHTERS OF ANY ERA ARE
JON JONES
DC
ANTHONY RUMBLE JOHNSON...

Nobody from NO ERA can beat these guys in they 205 PRIME.....

remember this guys

THIS IS THE WEAKEST ERA in the 205 division,
he got knocked TF out and mostly beat up by a middle weight
and IZZY TOOK HIM DOWN WITH EASE......

I am one of the bigger Rumble fans on here and often the first one to point out that Rumble's TECHNIQUE and defense were just absurdly under rated...

But MMA is about matchups and the cold hard truth is that when Rumble got tired or even a little bit nervous, or felt like he was against some sort of danger in his opponent's striking, he went to his wrestling. Even in fights where I believe he very well could have won by striking/sprawl and brawl. Let's use DC and Vitor as pretty prime examples of this.

Now could Rumble take Poatan down and beat him on the ground? Maybe, but I wouldn't be confident at all.

Current Alex and his more confident and more assertive offensive approach is a tough out at LHW. Gun to my head if I had to pick a LHW to beat Poatan at LHW I'm going with Daniel Cormier.

Not really sure how this is a debate. One is a champion of 2 divisions with multiple defenses and has beaten several UFC champions including a Izzy who is one of the greatest MW’s ever.

But rumble was “explosive” and “powerful.” Okay??

Alex by massacre.
Umm... Rumble would've been a LHW champ with multiple defenses of these two guys nicknamed Bones and DC weren't around. And don't get it wrong. If DC and Jon were still at 205 then Poatan wouldn't be champ.

How am I trying to discredit Rumble when I literally created the thread picking him to win?

Poatan and it would look like the Hill fight.

Vitor fight is a bad example because they wouldn't let Rumble rehydrate past a certain weight. When you're dehydrated your easier to knock out because there's less brain fluid surrounding your brain meaning your brain will hit your skull with less cushion leading to more knock outs. I still think Rumble could've knocked out Vitor but he chose the path of least resistance and the ref screwed him.

Rumble was fast twitch and extremely powerful. He also had a great chin. I can see him putting Alex out.

I respectfully disagree.

"I still think Rumble could've knocked out Vitor but he chose..."
<PlusJuan> there it is.

When shit got stressful Rumble wrestled.

I will even agree with you that Rumble got fucked by the ref and MAYBE could have even won (utilizing his ground game) a decision or later stoppage if the ref didn't give those ridiculous standups.

And yes, I think he would have KOed Vitor without having to fight Vitor and the ref that night.
That was VERY frustrating.

I will agree that not fully rehydrating likely amplified his fatigue, gassed him faster and provided an express lane to the point that where he reverted to instinct.

But my main point is that, especially when you introduce FATIGUE, but I think it applies to stress or fear, or whatever:

fighters revert to their comfort zone, logic be damned. Like Dustin Poirier and his jumping guillotines, it doesn't matter if EVERYONE else sees the writing on the wall, if his head coach spends the entire minute between rounds telling him no guillotines, that instinct is nearly impossible to overcome. And Rumble's instinct was to go to wrestling, even to his own detriment, like vs DC who there was no way on earth he was going to outwrestle DC, but he took the fight that way anyway.

If you could play Rumble like a video game, and therefore remove the instinct to revert to wrestling, I consider him one of the best strikers and KO artists ever. Very dangerous to anyone, Poatan included.

If rumble were to land the same stemmed

I can't disagree with you mate

There's something to consider there with the weight cut though. Rumble missed weight and they made it so that he could not rehydrate past a certain weight before he got into the cage.

He was essentially still dehydrated in there, which massively hindered his performance.

At least that's what I remember. I can try and find a source later.
Ya they had it at like 198 or 199 lbs or something. It was supposed to be mw. They went well above the mw limit to accommodate him.

I respectfully disagree.

I disagree. Who did rumble fight that was as fast as him? Let alone faster as Belfort 100% was. I think the first exchange and then vitor charging him after the blocked head kick or whatever it was made him calculate not to stand with the guy. Then he got stuffed going for a takedown, and rather than get pounded out he gave up his neck just like against DC.

If he wrestles he's got a chance. If he stands with him then I don't think it really matters how good your chin is when it comes to the kind of power Poatan has.
I wouldn’t even say his chin is that good. I remember dc rocking him on the ground before he just gave up his neck, then I remember in his last fight some bjj guy cracking him and almost putting him out. Those are the times I remember him getting hit clean. No way in hell he lasts against poatan.

So if we completely rewrote the MMA gene pool and history and used a Delorean to alter reality, blah blah blah blah

If Jose Aldo were 8 inches taller and 60 pounds heavier, none of those guys woulda been champ at 205 either, am I right?

Silly conjecture (imo). Alex is a significantly better striker than Rumble. Rumble had great power, was fantastic to watch and I loved him, but it translated to being a champion of nothing. Alex has great power and is a world class multiple division kickboxing and UFC champion.
