Paul Felder - "How does this kid even make welterweight"

He is 6’5 and fights at welterweight. They are surprised he is able to cut that much weight

who is 6ft5 and fights at WW?

I thought this was about Morales.. who is supposedly 6ft (more 6ft1 considering he was almost as tall as Magny)

Morales is not that big. He does not have super big muscles or anything. Just a good frame and nice looking body (no homo.. well maybe a little)
He said it about Nursulton Ruziboev

Why do UFC commentators , and also ex fighters like Felder and Bisping last night, always act surprised when a fighter looks much bigger than their weight class on fight night?
They bring it up in almost every fight — saying things like, "He looks absolutely huge" , or “How does this kid even make welterweight”
But isn’t the answer obvious?

Fighters weigh in a day before the fight. That’s the whole point — they cut weight, step on the scale, and then spend the next 24 hours rehydrating and bulking back up.
There are well-known techniques fighters use to maximize this advantage.
By the time they step into the cage, many are realistically fighting a weight class above the one they officially weighed in for.
So why do the commentators keep pretending to be shocked? Is it just for show? Some kind of marketing tactic or narrative-building?
Are we really supposed to believe they don’t understand how weight cutting works?

So how does that kid even make [insert weight class here]?
Easy — he doesn’t actually fight at that weight. He just weighs it for a minute the day before.

Do you think when they ask that they aren't aware that he only needed to get to that weight for a minute the day before? That long time UFC fighters like Felder and Bisping (who had to do dozens of weight cuts of their own when they were fighting) don't know that Morales isn't actually fighting at 170?

FFS dude, use your brain. They are saying that given his size in the cage, it's amazing he was able to get down to the limit AT ALL, even the day before and taking into account rehydration etc.

The kid is the Michael Jordan of weight cutting.

I'm not sue how you'd stop drastic skeletor weight cuts because whatever metric they use, they're all going to manipulate it as much as possible.

Currently, they have called-off weight cuts for people who's kidney markers are dangerously low. Perhaps they could use that same science to raise that threshold, to make sure everyone stays at a "non-skeletor" level before weighing in? That could make for more "last minute cancelled fights" though.

I don't know enough about the science of it all, but there might be a something they can monitor in that way throughout fight week, & fighters would just have to be professional enough to be monitoring that stuff leading up to fight week. We'd still see drastic weight differences though. Some people's body mass just lands perfectly on a weight class while others don't.

GSP comes to mind for someone who could've cut more than his weight class, but the 15lb diff. to 155 kept him at 170... where-as other fighter's natural body land on 170 at the absolute limit of their weight cutting capacity. <-- There's no way around that imo, & so you'll have bigger people on fight night no matter what you do.

I've heard of some commissions having a post-weigh in/pre-fight weight in limit, (a certain amount over the weight class prior to entering the cage) though I haven't heard about that in a long time, so may no longer exist. That's an option that could be enforced further, but then you'd have fights falling off after teh weigh in/hours before fighting... & that's just not manageable.

This seems like a topic that fanz will perpetually post about forever... (on par with "the UFC is dying") but there doesn't seem to be any realistic solutions too it.

<PlusJuan> this is the grim reality.

You have a bunch of people who are slaves to their emotions and choose to be fully idealistic and ignore logic... acting like they have a simple solution to a complicated problem.

Which usually boils down to:

"athletes need to stop being competitive minded because they are doing a thing (fully within the rules ) and I don't like it."

Every "simple solution" either leads to:
- more harm for the athletes
- fight cancelations or
- absurd cost.

i feel the same way about the 'news'
like we all know humans are fucking savages and we murder, rape , steal, lie, and do everything else to satisfy our weak egos.
why the fuck we gotta keep reporting this shit. its not news..... its everyday occurence.

Yeah even fighters can be surprised lol
and Whittaker even commentating on how people SHOULD be talking more about it haha

The way I see it everyone has their strengths and weaknesses. Some guys are naturally faster, some naturally hot harder, some can naturally take a better punch, some have longer reach. I see weight cutting as long those same lines. Some guys are just really good at it and they use that to their advantage. Gotta play the cards you're dealt.

i don't think they're pretending that weight cutting isn't a thing...they're just basicaly saying "how does he manage to cut so much weight?"

To be honest, I really hope they disallow this excessive weight cutting. It's not healthy for the fighters and unfair for the opponents. Just imagine GSP vs Alex (if GSP had gone to MW).

It’s one of the topics that the commentators are instructed to mention repeatedly. Other topics include leg kicks, pace/gas tank, and “high level grappling.” By mentioning this stuff constantly, the commentators create excitement for boring fighters by pretending stuff like weight cutting and cardio are exciting.

Paul Felder's commentary is terrible 90% of the time. I was just thinking how bad him and Bisping are together last night while I was watching the card. I might just switch over to the Spanish broadcast next time.

Yeah, 2 ex-fighters who cut 20+ lbs many times in their careers should not be at all surprised when a 6'1" WW steps in the cage weighing 195 lbs.

OMG commentators commented. This is outrageous and has to stop!

Morales is a very large WW but also...Burns us a former career LW and was never considered a large LW. At 170 he found a second life in his career but his frame was small, he wasn't hugely muscled or big for the division. So the size difference probably seems huge. Guys like Shavkat, Khamzat, Morales etc. Are weird middle grounds, they are huge for 170 but you can see Khamzat is maybe an average sized 185er.
No khamzat gained weight. The narative that moving up makes you smaller isn't always the case. Rumble fought at ww than one was huge LHW. I am certain Khamzat is as big as the rest at MW.

Are you under the assumption the announcers don't know about weight cutting?

Jeez sherdog's cumulative IQ is sliding fast

Seriously though I agree with the we agree to fight at 170 but when we actually fight I'll be 195 is kind of bullshit and then there's the everyone is doing it bullshit bc if that's the case and all cut the same then just stop and you'll still be fighting the same ppl.
Jeez, my brain cells can't seem to stop dying from the stupidity
