Hey there,

i think it's been brought up before that hardly any fighters use these devastating close range strikes anymore since Bas Rutten?
Would you believe the only fighter i've seen in YEARS who uses LEGITIMATE "Palm" strikes i.e The heel of your hand, like if you swivel your hand upwards it stiffens the heel of your hand so it's the root of your thumb into your wrist if you get me. Is Conor McGregor. Watch any of he's fights. Any situation in a Clinch or specifically when he's mounted (Check the chad Mendes) he NEVER punches in the clinch really and ONLY uses Palm/Heel of hand strikes to the ears and temples. The guy got beaten by a bigger heavier man, but you can't knock he's fight mentality. Like i always see fighters in the clinch/close quarter turning over their wrists and trying to ram the cusheoned knuckles (The softest part of the glove with the MOST wrap underneath) into someone. Sure it hurts, but not as much as the heel of your hand which is basically bare bar one wrap of cloth and it's hard as HELL. Lift your hand up now, hold your arm out straight, swivel your hand/knuckles back so they're facing you, now keep them in that position and just tap your temple etc with the heel of your hand, it actually jars your brain. I think that and the boby kicks Conor did on Mendes was what finished him pretty much. While Mendes had him mounted he was just POUNDING those palms into Mendes temples and ears..

Watch any of he's fights in the UFC (Even the Diaz fight, even when he was badly hurt just before the takedown attempt when Diaz was punching he against the cage, McGregor was still palm striking Diaz)

These attacks are SO much more devastating at close range, especially with all that knuckle wrap and glove cushioning.

What do you guys think?

Thanks for reading!

It think without proper form its a danger to the fingers, and wrist. Most dont train this while striking. So you wont see much of it.

Seems legit.

Seriously???
It takes as much movement to pull your fingers back out of the way as it does to make a fist.

The guy who taught my "NO means NO: Take Back the Night" self defense classes seemed to like them.

I had to place my palm on my chin to keep my head from hitting the desk while reading this post.

Seems like a good way to poke someone in the eye.

Palm strikers in real life situations are much safer and do about the same amount of damage. You throw a closed fist (without gloves and wrap) and you are in real danger of breaking your hand.

i don't think you guys know what i mean, i don't mean the bruce lee think doing it at arms length like bruce lee, i mean when you have someone in your guard and they have underhooks for instance, or you're against the cage and they have 1 underhood, you can use short range heel of your hand strike just with your fingers bent a little. Just watch the mendes fight, in the 2nd round when he's ontop of him, watch how he does it, it's f*cking painful and jars your brain so much more than short range punches from those positions.

i didn't mean using instead of straight lefts etc, i meant very short range, 6 inches for instance

Bas said the tattoo on his palm says "if you can read this, you're too close." Idk if that's true or not.

Palm heel strikes and casting forearms will get their due when kyokushin gets its due mma application

There's a gif somewhere of Chael doing a double palm strike on Anderson's head in full guard.

Oh i get what you mean. Its kinda like whats called boxing the ears. You lose position doing that. Especially when you are up against yhe fence. That arm is needed to post to get up.
