News Ozzy has passed.

Some theory crafting I read online indicates that Cliff dying was the best thing to happen to Metallica. He was inclined to do more melodic stuff (Call of Ktulu, Orion) hinting about shifting to prog.

I never bought that.
Some say Cliff was the real heart and soul of Metallica and are responsible for the quality of their first three albums... But that doesn't explain how Justice was awesome.

Even Lars said Cliff wouldn't allow them to 'Go Mainstream' with the Black Album. But the issue is rock back then was constantly evolving and also people change.

So many bands back then were popular and *poof* never heard from again. Changing to a different style of rock would be much preferred than complete irrelevancy and *poof.*

I bet Cliff would have stuck around and evolved with James & Lars, but he absolutely wouldn't have cut his hair in the 90s. He'd keep wearing bellbottom jeans until he died of old age.

Imagine Cliff and Bob Rock butting heads because Cliff wants a 9 minute epic instrumental.

Speaking of Bob Rock, one thing I've always been curious about is the progressive success of Metallica throughout the 80s, from a business perspective, which earned them Bob Rock as their producer for the Black Album, and almost an entire year of writing and recording with him.

From what I understand all of the former albums were organized, written, and recorded in a very quick timeframe because recording studios were expensive to rent.

And also they didn't record another album for 5 years ... Mostly because of the constant touring around the world... but also a dispute with their label, I believe.

Love to learn more about the backstage & management politics.

I thought it was funny when the Osbournes suggested he held on to do the farewell show.

Like, sure, OR iit killed him.

I think he died shortly after because I believe he had no purpose anymore in life after he retired. I've seen that happen with other retirees who didn't have meaning after in their lives. It does happen.

That's pretty impressive. Great effort.

Don't know if anyone posted this yet. I remember watching it live back in the day but Conan's team reposted it after Ozzy's passing and it's gold.
