Never been a big fan of Overeem myself over the years......but his HW wins resume is now pretty impressive. He has now beaten 5 former or current UFC HW champs: Werdum, Lesnar, Mir, Dos Santos, and Arlovski....With that said, most were past their primes at the time of victory, but that is still an impressive list of wins on his resume. Makes you scratch your head at some of his HW losses.....especially the Big Foot fight.......

Being that he struggled with elite LHW fighters over the course of his career (Shogun, Arona, Chuck....etc....) Just wonder if any current LHW contenders may benefit from a jump in weight to test the waters?? Wouldn't mind seeing Rumble give it another go, or Gus and Glover give it a shot, if all officially reach the "Rich Franklin Stage" where they are Top 5 in the class.....but not quite able to hang with the champ any longer. Anybody else have any thoughts?

Sakuraba is a former champ of sorts to.

Beating him these days doesn't mean squat.

"Former" is the optimal word here although the JDS victory is huge.

Pivotal even.

Big Foot had more testosterone than blood in his body when he beat Reem. Also Alistair has changed his style a lot, relying less on physicality and more on timing and technique.

Reem becomes champ in 2016.

Although I still love watching the HW, i question if its due to nostalgia, the division is not deep and no new talent.

Overeem frame is enormous though, he was skinny at 205, while Gus and Glover are almost as big as they can be without getting slow and inefficient.
And Reem had a little "push" when it came to bulking.

I actually kinda like Overeem, he isn't on the same level as Mark Hunt for me, but that is like the last excuse you could make for a guy like Overeem.

More guys should move up to HW from LHW, the skill level is much lower.

JDS is clearly not past his prime, he may not be at his best but he's still a beast. Its Overeems biggest win and the biggest win for any HW since Werdum beat Cain.

Well, people praise the crap out of Jones' resume, and his is pretty similar as well (IMO).

Machida - FORMER Champ (small LHW)
Shogun - FORMER Champ (small LHW) -EDIT: Not "former" at the time, durrr
Rampage - FORMER Champ
Rashad - FORMER Champ (small LHW)
Vitor - FORMER Champ (small LHW)

Those are all the former Champs Jones beat that people refer to when mentioning his status as "GOAT", but can we honestly say (without looking at size) that they weren't "past prime" during the Jones fight?

I give an exception to Rashad because he was 32 at the time and wasn't doing horrible. Vitor could get a pass due to him going on a streak afterwards (at MW), but he was also pumped on TRT.

So how can we call Jones "GOAT" for, essentially, beating the same line-up Overeem did, but downplay Overeem's wins? I also believe the wins for Jones is still big, but not nearly as big as many people hype it to be.

Also, HW pool is very shallow...just like LHW.

Wasn't Overeem already "busted" before that and everyone was mentioning how "small" he looks?

You can't really claim he beat the HW champion Werdum.
When AO beat him, he was not as well rounded as he is now.
Same for Lesnar and others.
I mean, Lesnar had just being exposed by Carwin, humiliated by Cain and was basically leaving this sport to go back to the security of scripted fights...

don't forget his best accomplishment

Lesnar would have won, wouldn't have retired, and the HW division would still be his.

Fuck you Alistair. Cheating Motherfucker

But he did beat Werdum in Strikeforce.....just before Werdum entered in the UFC.....and Werdum is the Current HW Champ.....I'm just saying that this is an impressive list of wins at HW, even if most of the fighters were past their primes at the time of victory. People like to bring up big name wins when mentioning GOAT status or comparing all time greats....and often point to wins guys like Bones and Fedor have over the years....especially Fedor's wins over former UFC champs......

Same can be said for Overeem in this regard....this is an impressive list of wins at HW.....and think about it....Randy Couture for example doesn't have a list of wins at HW as good as Overeem's Top 5 now.

And you think that Lesnar got that big on peanut butter?

Don't get me wrong, I agree with you it is impressive.
But it has to be put into context.

For example, Werdum really improved his standup AFTER his loss to AO... and IMHO he lost only because he kept flopping to the ground. Because he was beating AO up in striking.

Or (just to change a little), see how Conor's fans are quick to point he beat a top 5 in Holloway. What they don't say is that Holloway himself said he didn't train hard up until his defeat to Conor. That was what lit a fire in his arse, and made him become the monster he is now.

So while COnor beat a very good fighter in Holloway, you can't say he beat the fighter Holloway became now.

Contradicting yourself much?
In the same sentence even.

"JDS is clearly not past his prime, he may not be at his best but he's still a beast" Not being at ones best is being past ones prime.

And you think that Lesnar got that big on peanut butter?

All I know was he was always clean for fights, and never hid from testing.

Given two guys about the same size. A 14:1 T/E ratio DURING THE FIGHT will give you a ginormous advantage against a guy in the legal limit.

That said, Overeem's wins over Werdum, Arlovski, Cigano, and Lesnar were significant. None of those four fighters were over the hell when Overeem beat them.

Mir I'll grant was not that great a win.
