Law Oregon rolls back decriminalization of drug possession

"We don't understand, It worked in Portugal"

The reason they're telling you "I told you so", is because this lame brain LIBERAL idea predictably failed, and it was under the guise of "fixing greater societal issues". This was their "fix of greater societal issues", and you likely defended it, which is why you're bitter that it didn't work, and those "stupid chuds" were right...again.
I'm not bitter, policies are not absolute, they didn't get the results they wanted so they're changing

Hopefully the legalize weed crowd sees this number and stops with the bullshit. If weed is legalized at the federal level the streets of America will be lined with dead bodies. Not just overdoses, but murders as well.

I remember that same crowd claiming that pot was a miracle drug that would lower heroin use and was a great tool to aid in the horrendous withdrawals from heroin. I can maybe see the latter having some validity-depending on the person. The claims were that people would rather smoke pot and would transition from heroin to pot . It doesn’t work, at least not for most people:

I have never tried heroin, but before my back surgery in 2019, I was in a ton of pain meds and I had to abruptly stop taking pain meds because thuey said they needed me to fo off of all pain meds because it I didn’t, the pain would be very sharp and wouldn’t be relieved by what they would give me in the hospital would be less effective. She said I will see firsthand which patients didn’t head the advice because they would be screaming in pain. Well, that statement really sank in and I immediately stopped taking all pain meds.

Had someone in the dr office told me, I would have tappered off slower, but no one told me until I was ten days out. The first thing was the pain. It came back with a vengeance, but the withdrawal symptoms were so fucking awful. Going from taking 4-5 percs/day to nothing sucked so exquisitely with the anxiety the worst I had experienced. I couldn’t sit still or lay in bed.

So I did what any cop would have done: I turned to edibles. I first messed around with edibles in 2016 in Seattle after we climbed a mountain and my back was killing me. It didn’t help in Seattle at all. I have had mixed results ever since. Sometimes it helps me no think about the pain, but I have had experiences where that’s all I can focus on. Mostly, it’s an all over body buzz that feels like bees on my skin, but the most intense pain usually fades away into the background. The problem is that I don’t like being high like that. I feel extraordinarily uncomfortable in any situation where I don’t have total control of my body. On top of the physical symptoms, a dark depression because I felt like such a piece of shit for being in withdrawal regardless of the fact that I was taking meds as directed by my doctor, but it still made me feel like a junkie.

So, in my experience, pot helps with back pain a little bit, but I don’t love the feeling of being high.

As for helping with withdrawal symptoms? Horrible for me. It did nothing to ease the anxiety or stop my legs from twitching constantly. Anyone that confidently tells you that pot will help heroin /opiate addictsb with withdrawals and even make them want to smoke pot instead is just insanity. The highs aren’t comparable, so you’re not going to fill the void from the now missing opiate receptors in the brain and smoking pot isn’t going to convince any heroin addict to switch to pot. No way

Who could have foreseen this? By reducing penalties and providing more resources for drug use, it's inevitable that more people would be inclined to partake. What an intriguing phenomenon.
Frankly, libertarians had been pointing to Portugal as an example of how legalization dissolves the dealer market and cures all for society. This clear example flies directly in the face of that approach and while decriminalizing things like weed are non issues, posession of opiods, barbituates and others serious drugs is obviously not going to lead to positive trends.

Those talking about Portugal don't really understand what Portugal did. In 2001, when they decriminalised drug possession into an administrative offence, they had total drug deaths of 76 per year. In the last 20 years this has fallen to as low as 10, but has seesawed in-between the highest and lowest figures.

Portugal also still has more opioid addicted people per capita than the UK, Denmark, Netherlands, Italy and Poland.

When talking about prison populations prior to decriminalisation, Portugal locked up around 4x as many people for drugs as the European median. They currently sit as more are less bang on the median average across the continent.

Also Portugal doesn't have the Fentanyl cancer to deal with .

I honestly don’t know how you could see the results of this experiment and still not be convinced

Because my goal is what's best for everyone.

Putting people in jail is a brute force solution that doesn't make things better for anyone in the long run, it's an infected Band-Aid.

What I’m saying though, is whether or not THIS is best for everyone. It clearly wasn’t.

This being decriminalization?

Addicts aren't criminals unless we want that. Addicts who commit crimes are criminals.

Prohibition makes addicts criminals and but that's a choice. I have to believe there's a better way.

Get ready for the socialist bedrock of who I am.... I think we as a society should worry more about the greater good than personal success. We should care about the health and well being of our brothers and sisters, even if it costs us money.

I probably pay a much higher percentage of my salary in taxes than you because I'm Canadian, but you know what? Our social safety net is a hell of a lot better and I'm thankful for it. Now that I'm older and have health concerns, I'm amazed by how much of is free. I have more money in the bank than I'll ever spend, but if I didn't I'd still be fine, and a lot of people don't.

Long story short I think just putting addicts in jail is a bad solution and we can do better. I wish we could have this conversation over pitchers of beer because it's long and complicated, I know you're very different from me, and I'd love to hear how you feel.

You’re ignoring the results of this trial though and are blinded by just not wanting to “jail” people.

Was this a trial with defined objectives, parameters and a plan, or just shit they threw at the wall?

they need to move to british columbia. weed is fully legal and there's pot shops on every other block and pretty much all other drugs are decriminalized where possession of up to 2.5 grams is legal. anywhere you can smoke cigarettes you can smoke weed and shoot heroin. they paused the public consumption laws and then the bc government tried to appeal but the bc supreme court shut it down yesterday, so the pause on the public consumption ban is still in effect and you can still shoot cocaine and opiods and smoke meth and crack in public while rolling your face off on ecstacy lol. but somehow being drunk in public or alcohol consumption in unlicensed public spaces remains illegal, not that it's really gonna stop anyone.

what a time to be alive.

I was Vancouver last year looking for a cigar lounge.

Rolled up and first thing I noticed was that all the cigar bands were some dull green band instead of the variety that you're used to seeing.

then I asked myself 'where is the smoking lounge?'

apparently not allowed anymore so I asked the owner 'why?'

I was told: two reason. the government is concerned about your health and they don't want to influence children with colorful bands.

I asked 'is there not a 21 and older only sign on your door?

'yes'

'so........do you turn a lot of children smokers away from the deplorable act of smoking in a cigar lounge?'

crickets

and the government is so concerned about our health and how kids will be attracted to smoking that it's banned everywhere indoors and yet youre free to shoot herion and smoke meth downtown skid row? because there are no kids to be seen?

make it make sense.

There's so many bad/stupid takes that my brain just blue screened

Rather than prison, how about rehab. Costs the tax payers about the same with better results.

3 strike policy, then you go to jail.
I tend to believe a person should be able to whatever they want with their own body- drugs included. I mean, if you can’t decide what goes in your body, are you actually free? This is especially true considering the Federal government is literally retarded when it comes to classifying drugs…

That said, I’m a fan of enhanced penalties for committing a crime while under the influence.
