I have done several tournaments so far and decided to go advanced and push myself and see some new stuff. Well the see new stuff part worked. ...we started and I tried an arm drag and then my opponent sat on the ground and the ref told me i had to engage the opponent. I don't understand why he didn't have to engage me. Do all tournaments do this? Any advice or loopholes for me?

That is standard. I recommend guard passing as the most common/effective counter.

Yea I need to work more standing guard passing. I went for a strait ankle and didn't get it

The game has changed and this is now normal. Work on your top game. Unless you are super high level the guards are all passable. Understand how to control the feet and get 3 or 4 high percentage passes. Ankle locks are going to lead you sweeps so stay on top. Pass mount and finish. That has to be your focus. Never go backwards.

I was gonna say the same as fanboy I usually pull guard but if someone pulls guard on me I usually take it as they made my job a little easier now instead of sweeping all I have to do is pass and submit

This is why guard pulling should be a penalty minus 2 points. Guard pulling is pretty stupid in a street fight and a MMA fight. It's sad a lot of modern BJJ hipsters don't want to learn takedowns/throws, but resort to that guard pulling crap. I miss the old school BJJ where people would fight for takedowns and not resort to that dumb butt scooting shit.

I agree, but I couldn't resist

And this is why I have come to hate BJJ competition.

Is that considered guard pulling? I get in gi dragging the guy down into a move, but this was no gi where the guy just sat down. Dumbest shit ever

He must have had some kind of hold on you, maybe an entangled leg or something.

Seriously, bring back old school late 1990's/early 2000's BJJ, where people ACTUALLY fight for takedowns! Enough of this butt scooting, berimbolo shit.

Also, I would recommend familiarizing yourself with the rules of the competition that you are participating in.

I never understood the hate for an opponent pulling guard. He/she is giving you the advantage, so why are you complaining?

I'm not a hater of guard pulling, but I can understand it. They really are not giving you the advantage, since there is no scoring penalty for it, and in pure grappling, a lot of times the guard is easier to score or submit from.

Get a collar/sleeve grip first. Put some weight onto your sleeve arm to prevent guard jumping. Start circling toward your sleeve arm. If he sits down continue circling and get into side mount/KOB/armbar.
