Only complete morons have Islam at #1 p4p

Considering usman vs leon and Jones vs gane is happening the winners of those fights will be ranked above him. It'll probably like like

Jone/gane
Volk
Usman/leon
Islam

Pretty valid points TS, and P4P is meant to be in some way equivalent to "best MMA fighter in the world" so to say that is true of Islam after a performance like that, not to mention the totality of his career, seems ridiculous. No idea how they calculate it on the UFC's official website. P4P champ has one title defence, against a smaller fighter, which many people thought he lost. How does that make you P4P #1? Maybe if he had 5 title defences you could make an argument, but he has literally one.

A toast to you and your friends, TS!

Agreed. I think if the lower weightclass fighter is competitive and goes the distance then that's a win for the lower weightclass fighter in the P4P debate.

Islam needed a pretty convincing win and he was well short of that.

did you miss the part in the build up when volk looked islam in the eye and said "LW championship on the line and p4p #1 on the line! lets do it "

by volks on admission he is no longer #1
That's a great point. He did say that word for word.

You dont move up in the p4p rankings by defeating an elite smaller fighter. You move up by beating an elite bigger fighter

If Perreira and Brandon Moreno were #2 and 1 p4p, Perreira wouldn't fight Moreno to move up in p4p, he'd have to fight at light heavyweight.

Islam should fight a top 5 guy at 170 to be #1 p4p

but does that mean that robert whittaker is forever handicapped at 185 and so he's better than izzy p4p ? Whittaker used to make 170. There is no way adesanya could.

there was 7-8 pound difference in the cage according to volk, who is probably biased.

If whittaker won fights at 205, then he should be way higher than everyone p4p for winning fights against tough competition at MW and LHW

It's pretty simple actually:

When you are the bigger fighter, you are supposed to win.

A smaller fighter eating more and cutting less weight doesn't make him equal size to the fighter a weight class above.

When you are supposed to win easily and the smaller fighter "almost" (if not actually) beats you, it is nothing to bragg about.

In short: The LW champ who is #2 p4p is supposed to beat a FW coming up to his weight class fucking easily. If he struggles to the point where people can debate who won the fight, it is embarrassing and definitely doesn't make him p4p #1.

If you disagree with the above it should be no problem for Islam to move up to WW and have a very, very close fight with the WW champ. He is in his estimation #1 p4p after all. I am excited to see him challenging the winner of Leon vs Usman next - hold your breath!

There was a good discussion about this on Morning Kombat. There are convincing arguments from both sides about who should be P4P.

While Volk makes a very good case with his performance, the fact is when you put your P4P ranking on the line and lose, you really can’t hold on to it anymore no matter what the intangibles were.

Lol, you are the one who is upset my friend.

No p4p#1 has ever been a guy coming off a loss. I'm sorry your boy needs to cut the extra 10 lbs to fight guys his height, maybe he can gain some courage from real giant slaywrs like Minowaman.

Normally not, of course. But this is an unusual situation.

The consensus (or near-consensus) top three was Usman, Izzy and Volk in some order. They all just lost and it’s now a relatively weak field. We’re stuck choosing a P4P who is either coming off a loss or who just got the title.

If Usman and Izzy hadn’t lost a lot of people would have Volk slotted in at #3 right now. Would that have been okay, or does a person coming off a lose have to drop outside the top five? Top ten? It’s completely arbitrary because it depends what the alternatives have been doing.

Again, you’re welcome to rank Islam 1, Volk 15, or both. My only point here is that there is no rule that the best guy in the world can’t be coming off a loss. Sometimes the best guy loses. *Usually* not. But sometimes.

I agree with what you said except the part where Islam should be "embarrased".

He did what he should have done. Volk is really, really good.

I don't think people know what P4P means.

Also, it's a stupid concept anyways.
