Volk offering it to Islam was in a sense clowning him.

Sure if Islam had put on a dominant performance as expected then in most peoples minds he'd be p4p no 1.

But he didn't. He underdelivered - remember the pre fight narrative was he would dominant, was a near 4:1 favourite because of this. Instead he won a close fight, and won it partially via having to stall. Ending the fight on your back eating punches isn't a great look either.

So yep, OP is right. Volk is still the no 1 p4p, and Islam is clowning his own credibility by thinking otherwise.

Yeah the principle TS you're describing typically is applied to fighters who are more than 1 weight class apart who will never fight each other.

155 was run by an ex 145 gatekeeper before Islam. Max went up to 155 and the guy who beat him was a 145 transplant. Islam should be ranked above Volk for beating him. Volk should not be graded on a curve here. Hes probably the 2nd best fighter in this division maybe by a healthy margin. Islam beat Volk he gets to be ranked higher at least for now.

Of course Jones is the REAL P4P number 1.

I don't get this logic, I see 145/155 as largely interchangable given how many 145'ers have made the jump. But hey Volks still number 1 so clearly the movers and shakers in the UFC agree with you. Cheerio.

It's not interchangable, Islam could never make 145, he almost kills himself at 155 making weight. Islam is significantly bigger than Volk, that's why Volk is better p4p after being in a very close fight with Islam. Personally I had it a draw. Rounds 1 and 2 for Islam. 3 and 5 for Volk and round 4 was a draw.
