PS: Josh also confirms what I said in another thread, that Khabib puts out more relentless (and therefore reckless) pressure. While the pressure and pace of Khabib are a weapon of sorts, they also leave him more open to submission counters. Islam is more methodical, doesn't waste his energy, which is why he is less likely to get caught. Very interesting.

It is also interesting what he said in reference to Brazilian jiu-jitsu versus Dagestani combat sambo:

• "Their style is not jujitsu, it nullifies everything we try to do."

This goes back to what I said to Madeline Chelsea, above. I said,

• Once on the ground, Islam is physically stronger than Oliveira, with much tighter technique, and he's used to a lifetime of a more dominating-style of grappling than Olivera. With Islam being used to training with the power and pressure of Khabib, Oliveira is going to be a walk-in-the-park on the ground compared to that.

And Josh Thompson, having rolled against Islam, as a BJJ guy, basically confirms exactly this. The Dagestani combat wrestling (which is basically judo, sambo, and wrestling — is specifically designed for cage fighting. BJJ is not. I think the physical strength of Islam + is more effective style of grappling is going to overwhelm Charles Oliveira, who is a little more frail in build, it does not have as domineering a style as Islam Makhachev.

Yeah, he emphasises this point in other places as well. That Dagestani style is just so different and overwhelming.

I think that on top of that, the best guys there have been doing it since they were children. So, not only is the style alien to the grapplers we've traditionally seen in MMA, but a lot of the Dagestani guys are better at their style than other top MMA grapplers are at their own specializations.
Another point I think is worth mentioning, is that the Dagestani fighters are not spread out across a lot of camps, which might slow the rate at which the rest of the sport can adjust to them.

Not even close. Dariush is the weakest of the LW title contenders. He’s an above-average fighter but not elite. Everyone in the top 5 beats him with ease.

The betting odds would actually hover around the PK em line and I'd laugh my way tobank. . Gaejthe only beats 21' 22 Dariush if he catches him flush. I see zero or very very minimal advantages by JG ....and I think hes #5 so I couldnt disagree more.

His striking is no doubt improved, but I would still favor Justin on the feet. Justin is more technical and has real power in the hands. The leg kicks alone would wobble Beneil after one round.

He has a slightly better chance of beating Porier and Oliveira but those two are still more polished.
