Uhhh....yes. The always-online requirement was one of the major controversies surrounding the Diablo III launch.
Yes it was controversial at the time but its not anymore. Plenty of games have followed this formula since because it is the only way for developers to control certain content (the loot system). Path of Exile released the following year with a similar system. The main reason is to prevent cheating and keep the important assets protected on the server instead on the client side. I have no idea why the developers wanted to do this for Godfall on the PlayStation but at a guess they want to stay consistent since they are also releasing this on PC.
Not all looter type games use this system obviously. Games like Borderland 3, Remnant, Torchlight 2 can be played offline. But it's not as if a precedence is being set with Godfall. It's a 3rd person melee co-op game with a protected loot system like Diablo 3/POE. What's wrong with this? Absolutely nothing.
