Official Women's Division Discussion #27

The UFC needs to be the premier organization at every relevant weight class, so atomweight is a problem, likewise 145 - surely you have to employ the baddest woman on the planet?

At the moment they have Nunes, but what happens when she retires? Dumont v Letson for the vacant belt? The Bellator shills would have a field day. My solution, scrap 145 and open 155. OK there are less available fighters than at featherweight, but so what. Kayla vs Claressa would be huge, plus the rematch and then Harrison v Shields 3. That's the first two years taken care of, three if we're on Rose time.

Something similar at 105, with these rival organizations and their classy rosters. Solution don't compete, ignore, open Super Atomweight. Easier for the small girls on the present roster to move down and while the rivals might have atomweight, the UFC would have SUPER atomweight, that's obviously the superior product.

Featherweight as a whole is already pretty trash, lightweight is even more so.

Rizin (108lb) and Shooto(110lb) already have super atomweight.

Just so you know Kayla Harrison can make 145.

I don't know what has gotten into me but I have been getting interested in watching Kayla smash all these girls. Her vs Cindy should be interesting.

They’re purposely trying to repeat last year’s final. It’s so obvious with the matchmaking in the regular season.

I think they decided to book Harrison vs Dandois right now, instead of hoping for Cindy to earn 6 points in her next fight, which seems like a tough task, she might only earn 3 or 4, and not qualify for the playoffs. Just pit them against each other, and not risk having someone pull off an upset like it happened with Kaufman last time around.

If no one pulls off an unexpected first round finish, I think we'll be seeing Harrison, Young, Pacheco, and Fabian moving on.

I am new to this PFL format. I have a question. How are the regular season matchups determined?

Well then PFL is not as fair as I was lead to believe. They can manipulate this like any other promotion. If you wanted a completely fair way to do it you could have everyone fight every other opponent once in the regular season then use the point system for the tournament seeding. Them being able to pick and choose allows them to matchmake to more likely than not get the desired outcome they want for the tournament seeding.

As an example if Kayla would have lost her 1st fight. They will them matchmake her vs the worst possible opponent to make sure she gets enough points to at least make the tournament. For another example, you just match up all of her worse matchups vs each other. They kill themselves off and Kayla has less to worry about in the tournament. Now That I am paying closer attention to PFL its not as pure meritocracy as I was led to believe.

It makes sense in theory but the reality is that would mean 9 fights a year in the women's division.

Yea, its not realistic but was just giving an example of the only way it would truly be a meritocracy as was advertised. A random draw of names for regular season fights would be a more reasonable alternative. Make it a show to get some extra views and to dispel any fixed claims.

They could still fix a "random" draw somehow. It's just regular matchmaking, business comes first, fairness comes second.

I called it after PFL 3, that they'd book Pajic against Fabian or Sanchez (they did), because they're following the "what's exciting on paper" approach. Pajic is not, and was never expected to move on to the playoffs, she got obliterated by Pacheco already, so her only purpose left is to put over another favorite, or have an exciting match: Enter Genah Fabian, who is a striker and someone they want on the playoffs. Whether she gets a finish or not, a victory for Fabian secures her a spot in the playoffs.

Morais' designated purpose was to be fed to whoever they want in the playoffs. Harrison pretty much secured her spot already (with 6 points), Young only managed to earn 3 points, and to make sure she's in the playoffs, they're also feeding Morais to her. Whether Young gets a finish or not, she'll end up with enough points to qualify.

Pacheco already secured her spot too, and Kolesnyk is a fairly easy match up for her. Unless there's a crazy upset, Pacheco should move on to the playoffs even if she drops a decision to Kolesnyk.

Harrison already secured her spot, and even though Dandois might be (on paper) one of her toughest competitors, Kayla is bound to move on to the playoffs too. I'm rooting for an upset (let's go Cindy!), but this is a good way to make sure that Kayla faces at least two of her toughest challengers before the finals.

Guardado vs Sanchez is the wild card here, because Guardado has 3 points, and if she wins (regardless of how she does it), she could easily sneak into the playoffs instead of Young or Fabian. But here's the thing: Sanchez is (on paper) a rough, rough match up for Guardado. Kolesnyk wasn't an easy win for Guardado, their fight was competitive, and Taylor couldn't get a finish even on the ground. Sanchez is bigger (I'm talking about a big height and weight difference here), strong, aggressive, and I imagine she's hard to keep down. See where this is going? Not a favourable matchup for Guardado at all (while Young and Fabian who are tied with Guardado, got the two women that got finished in seconds).

So, who’s gonna be brave enough to subscribe?

Not me. I've never subscribed to one of those things. More power to her as she'll make some cash. Isn't a lot of this now day to day stuff like training, cooking, shopping etc.? Maybe she'll be more adventurous but who knows lol. Not my cup of tea.
