If PS5 Pro grapevine proves real, will you be upgrading in 2024?

Thoughts on the Portal.

+ Most comfortable handheld on the market. Obviously that's because of the decision to basically chop a DualSense in half. You could argue this design choice made it uglier but I'll trade that in for comfort any time. Switch is aesthetically more pleasing but I also find it not as comfortable.

+ Big screen means you can enjoy any game on it. This one surprised me, I thought I'd never bother with the AAA narrative games on this machine but I could honestly see myself still enjoying them and not having it detract from the overall experience. I'll try to get to my TV for games like Rebirth but at least this is a nice alternative when TV isn't an option.

+ Battery life is reasonable. I don't have time to game for more 5 or 6 hours at a time anyway.

+ Latency seems to be okay. I am not hardwired into the router because it's with me in the office and my PS5 is in the family room downstairs. I still get some lag through the WIFI but this wouldn't be an issue for anyone connected directly. JRPGs are not affected by this too much thankfully due to the nature of the gameplay. That's mostly why I bought this machine in the first place.

- Awkward choice to put Touch Pad on the screen. I don't like touching the screen often because I don't want to have to wipe it down each time after a session. This means games like Alan Wake 2 which use this feature a lot can be incredibly frustrating to play.

- The placement for the USB charge port is kind of weird. I had to wrestle around with my Portal to find the best entry point. I also wish I didn't have to put it directly into my PS5 each time to charge.

My critical score would be an 8 or 8.5 out of 10 but I feel it is more like a 9 with how much I am personally enjoying it.

Nice write-up, Zaz. One thing I'm seeing in chorus both here and elsewhere is how big a home-run the screen quality is. Sony knows where not to cut corners – and now everyone's talking about precisely the feature. Smart.
 
Played through half of Bloodborne with absolutely zero issue on the Portal. BSB, Amelia, viscerals, all those particle effects, absolutely indistinguishable from playing on the PS5.

Thanks. Yes, the screen is pretty great. By the way, did you pick up The Last Faith? It's a new Souls game similar to Blasphemous. I heard it was pretty good but not amazing. I'm still working on Alan Sleep 2.
 
Kind of sad that Naughty Dog had to come out and say that the remaster of Part 2 was done by a team of new hires. People actually thought Naughty dog was like "alright boys! all hands on deck! We need everyone here to stop what they're doing to polish up this game that's already been released years ago." When are people going to learn that these teams can do more than one thing at a time? I get it's frustrating that we haven't seen any new game from them but Last of Us Part 2 came out in 2020, only three years ago. I think we get something from them in 2025.
 
Spent more time with some modern titles and I get that it’s really just the remote play feature but this device is staggeringly cool. I must’ve had some connectivity issues initially because Spider-Man 2, Demon’s Souls, Resident Evil 4, all look and feel like a shrunk down version of what I see on my tv.

You’re not getting close to this experience with a Backbone.

e/ Just checked PS Store and it launched Wed, priced at 27€ and needing north of 5GB for space. That’s a cop for me.
 
Returnal director Harry Krueger will be leaving Housemarque after 14 years with the studio. Noooooo! I usually don’t care about people leaving but shit…. this one sucks. This guy had a large role in 3 games that are some of my favorites of all time. They’re Resogun, Nex Machina, and Returnal. This dude is brilliant and at least he says the studio is in a good place so I hope they continue to deliver but this man is going to be hard to replace. Here’s a wonderful interview with him while he was promoting Returnal if any of you missed it.

Sony (6758.T) must face a mass lawsuit worth up to 6.3 billion pounds ($7.9 billion) over claims the PlayStation maker abused its dominant position leading to unfair prices for customers, a London tribunal ruled on Tuesday.

Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) was sued last year on behalf of nearly 9 million people in the United Kingdom who had bought digital games or add-on content through Sony's PlayStation Store.


Alex Neill, a consumer advocate who has worked on previous campaigns, is bringing the case against Sony which is valued at up to 5 billion pounds ($6.23 billion) plus interest.

Her lawyers said the aggregate damages estimate of the case was up to 6.3 billion pounds in court filings last month.

I love this particular quote "The actions of Sony is costing millions of people who can't afford it, particularly when we're in the midst of a cost of living crisis and the consumer purse is being squeezed like never before."

Since when did video games become a need? It's unfair that Bugatti costs as much as it does, why the hell am I not entitled to one? But seriously, why are Nintendo, Microsoft, Google, etc not being sued as well? All companies do this. It all just seems very strange. Hopefully this doesn't go anywhere, that's a lot of money and would potentially kill the brand.

I just don't understand how this can even be a thing. Every company does this and Nintendo is far worse by putting ports from Wii to Switch and charging 60 for it without ever offering discounts. Sony is always having sales, people can just wait a few months if they don't want to pay full price.

I think its more of the fact that you can only buy PS games / addons digitally whereas you can buy digital codes for Xbox and Switch on Amazon for example alongside the respective console storefronts. Sony pulled them being available through other store fronts a while ago ( can only get PS Wallet codes now) along with the prices Sony charges in the store

She says the company abused its dominant position by requiring digital games and add-ons to be bought and sold only via the PlayStation Store, which charges a 30% commission to developers and publishers.

Really? I see the digital codes at local stores I go to and they’re still on Amazon too. I personally buy mine at Costco because sometimes they do spend 80 get 100 dollars of credit
