Ryan on Sony mission:

"We will do what we are doing right now, which is to become less reliant on 3rd Party games and 3rd Party royalties, and to make more 1st Party games. If we double our share of 1st Party games, which are more profitable than the 3rd Party royalty stream, it will bring down our reliance on 3rd Party games."

"That is the single biggest thing, and one of the main reasons why we are embarking on M&A. I would like to point out that we are also growing our existing studios, increasing capabilities and their ability to output in various areas including live services. I feel like this part deserves a lot more attention than it currently gets. Large M&A gets all the headlines, but there is a lot going on, and growing your studios organically successfully is a smart thing to do."

I think they want what Nintendo has and that’s to carve out a part of the industry that isn’t competing with anything else. Let’s face it, Microsoft putting third party games on GamePass is value destructive, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard people say they won’t buy games like Lies of P because they’ll just do GamePass for a month instead. I’m seeing some people say the same thing about the next Yakuza games. It’s got to be doing some damage to third party sales. I agree with this mission statement. It’s also healthy for the brand because it adds something new to the industry, my beef with Microsoft’s acquisitions is that it adds absolutely nothing new to the industry. These are all games that would have released there anyway. Hopefully Sony sticks around for a long time to come, gaming would not be the same for me without them. Their first party games regularly end up being my favorite games of the year

Nice post. Same. I’m not loyal to Sony ecosystem because it’s Sony; rather it’s the only platform that offers me the games and gaming experience I want – something a joy to be a part of for me. I also work on computer all day so when it’s time to game, I wantneed a change of environment.

Industry snapshot right now is unsettling, yeah. Microsoft don’t innovate, they incorporate. Their OS is mid too, just like whatever they touch in gaming. They're businessmen with acumen for market saturation. Phil was RL wining and dining DF before they got Starfield copies, for example. That’s the only ‘game’ they actually play well: Business.

Still rings true

Always been a Sony guy, have owned every Playstation from the start. But since I consider myself a gamer I always dip my toe into the Xbox pool (aside from last gen) and am always left feeling the same. They are second rate in the world of video games and now that they've expanded almost everything they touch turns to shit. They're like the Disney of video games. I think Game Pass on paper is a great value and has its moments (Fall of 2021 for example). But overall it's full of games that I either don't give a shit about (mostly indies) or first party duds (Redfall, Starfield). Their OS is absolutely awful and they're a fucking OS company. Their controller is absolute cheap trash and then they try to charge for premium controllers. Get fucked.

I haven't used the Xbox OS since the One but I liked it more than Sony's. Although I only used it for a week so I might have ended up hating it with more use.

Right now I can't stand Sony's interface. It's so cluttered with BS. Finding all the games I can get with PS+ essentials is way to much work. It should be a separate tab in my game library. I do miss themes but at this point I'd just prefer to have the UI cleaned up from top to bottom.

I think the one positive leak we got from those Xbox emails was the no growth for GP in 2022. That's a massive blow for sub services. On top Xbox one sales dropping YOY consistently now. I think the consumer has spoken and they aren't satisfied with what MS is brining to the table.

Going all in on GamePass will be a mistake. Games are just too long to play this way. Let’s say you’re the average adult gamer and only have 5 to 10 hours a week. Oh great so now if you want to truly beat StarField you’d have to sub for months and that wouldn’t leave you much time to try other games. Games are not tv shows where you can simply watch on your phone for 20 to 40 minutes. You’re much better off buying a few great games each year unless you’re someone with a ton of time. Selling games also incentivizes devs to make the best game possible. Redfall never releases if it was targeting sales

Personally, I want Microsoft to succeed in the 1st party space. I'm a big believer in competition driving innovation.
If these were the 360 days then I’d agree. They had fantastic exclusives driven mostly by their in home studios. Right now they’ve made clear what they view their only real path to success is and it’s incredibly damaging to the industry.

My Xbox is a game pass machine. That's it. I don't own any Xbox discs and will never have any reason to. I play all 3rd party games on Playstation because they seem to perform better and the controller is much better. I also don't play a ton of games anymore and can feel my interest whaning (turning 42 next month). At this point our Xbox is mainly used for sports games and the occasional Game Pass game that actually comes through.

I've been anticipating Starfield for years but that game pretty much blows and is the most disappointing game in a while for me. Looking forward to Forza Motorsport but beyond that I don't see many reasons to have an Xbox.

I hear this from a lot of people but it makes sense. They’re throwing everything on GamePass so it doesn’t really make sense to buy games on that platform unless you just play 1 or 2

Agreed loved my 360. I don't understand what happened to them between then and now. Then again almost everything they had that I loved was 3rd party made. Alan wake, Tales of vesperia, mass effect. I was never big into Halo. Gears was amazing but after three games I'm good.

Ya, they've definitely had better days and It really does suck. Hopefully they can change their perspective in the future and focus on in-house projects.

Sony has been low-key rolling out official PS icons for PS Studios family members on Twitter, not unlike a verified checkmark. A remark was made elsewhere calling it a 'seal of quality' re: Sony first-party houses – I liked that. I thought the Horizon and Kratos icons were nice touches previously in run-up to respective launches.

What's the point of that? To make sure people can't imitate them since Elon made it easier to pretend to be someone else?

I’d file it under marketing and branding rather – like with the life-sized Leviathan (axe) installations across metropoles, which Sony has been stellar at.
