Were there new rule changes recently? If that's the case, it has gone completely under my radar. The last revision i remember was back when they outlawed korean seoi nage and allowed late stage leg grabs.

Wait, late stage leg grabs are allowed now during tachi waza? Didn't know about this. What are the scenarios where they're allowed?

When you apply tachi waza and grip under the belt in the stage of the throw where the opponent is already in a position which would normally be considered ne waza, the throw will be scored as long as it's a continuous motion. If the throw gets blocked and then you grab the leg and finish it after a pause, it will count as a turnover.

Timestamped.

I wish they'd just allow leg grabs with one hand on the uwagi or obi. It would remove morote gari and differentiate from Freestyle Wrestling, which is what they really want, and allow a lot of nice techniques like kata guruma and te-guruma.

Thanks. I think that makes sense given the (currently non-sensical) grip restrictions in place. Hopefully the IJF comes to their senses at some point and goes back to leg grabs being allowed for 3 seconds without a shido, like any unconventional grip now.

+1

Leg grab with lapel grip seems entirely consistent with the kind of Judo the IJF wants. Back in the mid 90's when they phased in the 3 second leg grab rule, our coral belt head instructor summarized it with "if you use them to take down uke immediately, leg grabs are good. If it takes longer than 3 seconds, leg grabs are bad."

No idea why they banned leg grab o uchi gari as per below. A variation of this was my tokui waza for many years in both Judo and wrestling and usually scored an immediate TD.

i'll die on the hill of allowing scrambling and giving stall shidos for turtles.

throw and roll, dammit.

Anybody wanna clue us in on any new rule changes? I'd look but my resolution this year is to stop finding new ways to disappoint myself.
The rule changes usually come in the months after the Olympics, so unless something has completely passed me by you can are saved from this particular disappointment for around two years.

cold = stoic, all business, stone-faced
since we're not allowed to gallivant around like a bunch of dipshits after the win

Kind of unfortunate incident. I think the reason for the bite was that the submission wasn't released when she tapped, which happened probably because the referee failed to stop the match.

If you're still cranking on the arm after uke tapped four or five times, you deserve a bite. Seems like she hurt the other girl's arm. That said, they were weak taps so maybe nobody is at fault here - if it's between biting someone and getting my elbow dislocated, I choose biting.

I often find tapping in judo quite funny. It's often light taps with no sense of urgency, then no release, the ref is nowhere to be found, then it gets cranked and applied 3 seconds too late until the ref puts down his coffee and steps in due to screaming.

Two weeks ago, Riner won the Paris Grand Slam. He will retire after Paris 2024 OG, and he said he will become a judo sensei.

I am sad that Ono is/has already? retired. I'd favor him to win a third Olympic gold over Riner, given how he has looked at his last couple of events he has participated at regardless of his success.

I'm four sessions back into training after a year and a half off.

Holy cow!

What is worse than my expectedly-bad cardio is my gripping. Luckily my dabbling in yoga seems to help when I get folded in half.

Your kumi kata or your grip strength?
