Official Judo Thread VIII

Ippy... you may be insanely jealous. I think on my FB feed there is a pic of Pavia in a bikini. Can't share bc it's a private photo.

Screenshot it then, caring is sharing bro.

Yeah, RJ's definitely been more Einarr like recently. Perhaps the loss has affected him more than we thought.

It's from the Einarr vacuum. RJ is filling the void. :icon_chee

Oh, if you see the picture on Facebook, add me, i'm the guy that responded W O W and doing the 'Bas' pose!

Yeah I think that's what it is.

I don't have facebook so I don't think I'll be able to see it, I can't even access all of my clubs' pages so I occasionally turn up to training when it's been cancelled because I haven't checked the facebook page.

It's a pain in the arse ha.

RJ, you're making a fine Einarr replacement :D
Well, someone's gotta pick up the slack.

We can't have the likes of snakeybizz running around free and unchecked.

I'm mildly jealous. I'm still a huge fan of Pavia, but now I'm on a Tarangul kick. Plus, Tarangul has nudes. Five seconds + Google is all you need.

We honor the legend by continuing the legacy.

What can I do if someone stiffarms me like crazy? I cant even get my grips and he doesn't even attempt to throw... Even if i get grips i cant throw him, becouse i can't get body contact due to his elbow sticking in my ribs preventing me from turning in (like this http://www.ejmas.com/jnc/cptsmith/Fig160.jpg). Only throws that works for me agains him are sumi gaeshi, yoko goruma and sometimes tani otoshi, but i need to get power grip first and throw is far from ippon.

I still struggle with getting past stiff-arms. I'm sure I still do it myself, on occasions.

This week I was subjected to a defense tactic which is far more funny, but no less irritating. I was sparring with a guy who was about three-quarters my height, so I was mainly looking for ashi waza, and he started doing this.

So as a defense to ashi-waza, he repeatedly lifts his feet high in the air and puts them back down in a rhythmic pattern? As in, exactly what you need to sweep him? I must be missing something, because that sounds tailor-made for ashi-waza.

You cannot do ashiwaza with just your feet. Your control and kuzushi is critical to prevent this. So obviously you will have a hard time forcing someone to stay put, so you need to move him so your can predict where he goes.

It always amazes me how older judoka are so good at avoiding the kuzushi and then just gracefully step around the inevitable frustrated kuzushi-less throw attempt that I follow up with.

That's real judo.

Sorry, I didn't spend long enough looking for the appropriately daft gif. He was kicking his feet out sideways. More like this.

This was also whilst stiff-arming to an extent, and sticking his arse way out. No way I was reaching feet or hips.

That's when you grab a HCG and snap his head down to the mat. They will straighten up after a few of those.

I'd uchi mata him through the floor. Uchi mata works great against the stiff arm unless uke is really dropping his weight, but if he's doing something silly with his feet like that he's not. It'll be a leggier uchi mata, but it should work.

I didn't realise you were back on the mat this soon.

No I'm not unfortunately. That was just reminiscence. I have a follow up appt on Friday with the surgeon, and then I'll find out how much longer before I train. In the meantime, I am slowly trying to pick up weight lifting in my garage, like so many others with a copy of Starting Strength and a power rack.

But my son did defeat four opponents in a row at the in-house tournament last Friday, so at least somebody is charging for judo glory.

Nice, I wish I got started at a young age, he'll be a beast if he sticks with it.

Get training on the squat and deadlift. Seriously, best advice I can give. It's really, really easy to screw up your back if you're doing it wrong. I fucked up my back for years with bad deadlifting form (and Judo. And bad posture).

You know that joke about the Old Bull and the Young Bull....

I swear thats a metaphor for Judo.

Yeah it's ironic I was just about to post a thread in S&C asking how to do this. I don't want to join a gym, but I'd like to do a couple private training sessions from somebody who knows what they are doing, and can help me at least get the basic form somewhat decent. So how to set such sessions up?

My squat form is terrible, I can already tell this. Deadlifting I seem to be better.
