Official Judo Thread VIII

I must have "good uke for Taiotoshi" tattooed on my forehead....

Today's lesson for the guys not working their kata for the Shodan grading next month...you only get one guess :)

All "I hate taking taio falls from shorter tori" bitching aside, great night, lots of throws and falls. Hoping me playing uke was a sign that my Tai-o was good enough to miss all the instruction, or maybe its because Tommy fall down go boom good.

I'm taking as a good sign that a sumigaeshi video of mine I posted on a friends FB page was later shared by the 6th Dan who instructs at the two clubs I train at.....

Had a damn good Judo session tonight.

I really liked the Tai Otoshi off of a failed hip throw.

I think my new tachi waza is Koshi Gurma/Kubi Nage. Being 6'2'', I can pull this off better than any other hip throw.

even harai?

even harai?

I have a love/hate relationship with Harai Goshi; it's something I definitely need to practice more. I've been able to hit the throw on smaller, weaker guys, but I have yet to hit the throw on a larger opponent.

Koshi Guruma just instantly clicked with me though, and I really like it considering that I can use it in MMA without having to drastically modify it. The head is right there for the grabbing.

Try Koshi Guruma with a Harai action. :icon_evil

Sorry if i've already posted this. I just really like Tai O.

"I hate taking taio falls from shorter tori"...

Hey, can you visit my club. [YT]d1Pz9RJU564[/YT] No one wants to take falls for my Tai Otoshi practice. It gets their Ricky Bobby gis in a bunch.

Speaking of hip throws, I came across this little gem yesterday:

I've always loved his style, partly because he doesn't seem to care about specific grips. It's like 'grip no matter. Just hip throw'.

Yeah that's an awesome video, I've been trying to do it a bit lately but I've had mixed results.

The tsuri goshi in particular he does, I find it easy as hell to get an overhand grip on just about anyone I do randori with but my tachiwaza technique is a fair bit behind my gripping.

I'd love to be able to do some theraband work with this technique.

The only hip throw I like is harai goshi.
Well there's that too but at the same time, even if I found aikido fun, I wouldn't bother training it.

Point taken.

I think I chronicled the reasons why I stopped kenjutsu in one of the earlier judo threads, but a major player in my decision is because it was too LARPy, and didn't have any live component.

"Foot sweeps are the essence of Judo."

What do you think of this statement?

I'm unsure myself, but I can respect that these techniques can deliver a fall which rivals hip throws, with far less effort.

I've tried the split entry from tsuri goshi that he does. I can't quite get it, it always ends up in a Uchimata variant.

Yeah I either don't get my hips far enough across or I step too deep with my back foot.

I'd like to be able to get good at either tsuri goshi/o goshi or Uchi mata.

At the moment the only forward throws I rely on are my drop seoi nage or tai otoshi.

Probably more accurate to say that they demonstrate the essence of Judo.

I watch these videos, I go to my club all hyped to look like Jarji (Illiadis) throwing huge hip throws...I come away looking like a white belt trying throws that are too advanced.

Thats how I do it.
Another reason to like belt grips.

It is a very frustrating part of judo, you watch a video like that and it looks like even a retard could hit that throw so easily .... and then you try it in real life and it just don't work.

Very different from BJJ where most moves tend to be relatively simple to execute, with like 2-3 key details, and then it's just not that hard to do them.

I hate the fact that belt grips can't be held for long periods of time (under the current ruleset you must attack instantly or let go) because the only way I can realistically use a forward throw against shorter defensive opponents tends to be by using a belt grip. There's just no other way to get the guy pulled up enough.

Thats the main difference between standing and parter grappling. In standing, the opponent can change fast angles, applied vector force and etc.
On the ground, the laws of phisics are the same, but limited by space, so it is easier to execute moves, especially when one's back is on the floor.

The timing footsweeps are upper echelon shit. My deashi is getting pretty wicked. Its the only throw where when I hit it cleanly I think there should be a score above ippon called "who's your daddy? I'm your daddy."

As far as iliadis, that tai otoshi/seoi otoshi is the shit, especially that baseball grip with the forearm pushing the inner lapel.

I still don't like getting between-the-legs low the way he and Koga do, but it makes sense if you have the height. Its the same idea as the sideways osoto -> the kazushi comes from moving your legs back and out from under you, and you use your arms/chest to transfer everything. You're essentially dropping uke down as you back under them, rather than throwing them OVER you. Uchimata too I spose.

I only hit one deashi in randori ever. I felt like a million fucking bucks when I did. It was my proudest moment in judo.
