Congrats RJ. I miss being a white belt in BJJ, it's the look I get when they realize the white belt is a Judo blackbelt, that's what I miss the most!

Ever since I started judo, my newaza has apparently become too reliant on "strength" and I'm far too "spazzy" for BJJ guys. Can't go for chokes while in someone's guard or I'll get armbarred!!! ...even though they almost went out and I was in no danger of reprisal in any form.

I got a guy tapping to kesa, but I'm using too much strength? Surely I'm doing something wrong, amirite?

Nice on the kesa tap, I've tried it a few times but usually just end up trying to transition and give up my back.

I just find it frustrating because I'm actually very relaxed when I'm on top, maybe not so much on the bottom, but I still get complaints from blues and purples that I'm using too much strength.

Funnily enough, I get the same in judo occasionally when I'm relaxed as hell and going against noobs. They'll just come out at the end of randori when I've been letting them work (to an extent) and go: 'I can't do anything, you're just too strong'. Yeah sure, that's what it is.

The trick is to give 0 fucks if you actually submit them with an armlock or choke. Get kesa, and keep kesa. With like 5 minutes left to slowly crush them, out of a 10 minute round, the tap IS coming.

One of the few things in life that puts my jimmies into Rustle Mode is accusing me of being too "spazzy" while rolling. (along with insulting my intelligence or saying that Chicago pizza is >>> NY pizza)

My reaction when those same accusers are huffing and puffing from the last roll, as I'm waiting to start the next round while meditation-level breathing...

Yeah, man... those 'Nascar pyjamas'. I'm almost 100% positive I'll be supplementing my Judo with BJJ when I move, but I am going to try and avoid wearing those Ricky Bobby gis that Beej guys love so much. Plain white Fuji for life! ( and a blue for comp, I guess)

There are A LOT of pussies in BJJ. I go pretty hard all the time, and I've definitely visited gyms where people aren't ready for a high level of aggression. I generally don't get called out on it due to my rank, but I do get a lot of comments about being strong even though I'm actually pretty weak for my weight class (probably in the bottom 1/3rd in terms of raw power). I like it when people go hard as long as they're safe, if you can't deal with a 'spazzy' guy your BJJ sucks. The only thing that annoys me about Judo guys in BJJ is that sometimes they have no idea how to progress on top because they're so used to being stood up, so it can get really boring when they're in your guard just basing out not doing anything. Even then it's a challenge though.

I never concede positions, unless it's at the very start of a roll (e.g. I'll let the white belt start on my back). I think it's very important to train not giving up positions 100% all the time. If you beat me, even in the gym, I make you beat me. Makes everyone better.

Yea it has definitely a work in progress for me but I have gotten better. When going against someone newer I would concede the positions sometimes to let them work(I would make them work just not to the extent I should where I'm just giving position) but I think it carried over too much to other people.

I love doing that
I usually let guys get all the grips they need and pull into whatever guard.
Then completely shut down every single move they try to pull, while using their mistakes and slowly progress to kesagatame. And then demoralize them with pure pressure, letting a bit of air in, so they dont tap...

The inevitable pass attempt consists of furiously jumping like a frog to one side and hoping kesa can be grabbed.

Thus I highly rate playing butterfly against judoka.

My judo coach was working butterfly guard newaza, usually with a belt grip and tomoenage- like sweeps.
He was also showing some counters.
Fact is, almost nobody was paying attention and normally just do 2-3 repetitions then jump into tachiwaza randori.
People practice what they see practical for their sport.
Butterfly guard in judo is practical after failed sacrifice throws, so turning throwers just dont see it as useful tool...

I've always had a vendetta against the sport Jiu Jitsu guys. I think a lot of the new guards are cancerous, and an outstanding way to get your ass kicked in the street or in the cage. I enjoyed learning Jiu Jitsu from MMA gyms, where we never trained any of that. You don't need to know how to do a Berimbolo from a De La Riva guard in order to have an effective ground game.

And I enjoy spazzy guys. All you have to do is defend long enough and then attack after they have used all of their energy. It does piss me off when guys hold guillotines in bad positions; you're not in any danger, but it fucking rips your ear lobe off the side of your head and is a good way to give someone cauliflower ear. Let's just say that I've gotten really good with the Von Flue Choke to teach guys that lesson.
