Really struggling to get my hips in on Uchi mata and O goshi in randori. Any tips?

I think I have noticed a severe defect in my tsurikomi kuzushi, but because I've been out of practice due to (a) school closed for holidays and (b) nose surgery, I can't test it out.

In a nutshell, I think my hikite hand has been driving the guy forward too much at an angle that is too far in front of my face ... rather than being out to my side, perpendicular, the elbow has been coming forward, more like 45 degrees. In other words, my elbow needs to lag back much further as I turn, allowing the space to collapse more and pull tighter. Too much emphasis on moving my opponent rather than pulling him tight is the problem here. Also having unflexible shoulders presents a problem. It is preventing me from turning fully and getting deep on my opponent.

This, I think, is a major reason why my harai goshi ends up being a sort of bulldog sideways osoto more than a beauteous forward throw. Not to say there's anything wrong with a bulldog sideways osoto, but I want to develop clean forward throws and work variations from there, rather than just osoto variations.

the forearm position the japanese use is a result of them having shorter forearms. shorter gaijin don't have as much of a problem, but we goofy gangly tall gaijin don't have the anatomy and compensate with the ugly elbow nonsense.

i ended up switching to a same-side lapel grip for morote against shorter guys. this let me keep my hands together and ahead of my elbows like i'm sposed to, and alleviates the feeling of my inside elbow wanting to blow out.

i don't really like the grip at the pec on most anybody under 6 feet tall anyway. i try to explain this to a shorter person by having them take a grip six inches lower than their 'standard' grip. then i sit there and pester them for doing it 'wrong' and 'not japanesey'

For uchi mata I know it helps me to drill uki goshi repeatedly, it helps me to concentrate on driving the hip contact hard. What are your grips for uchi? I like the hcg and real deep step on my penetration then hip contact on the back step, they should already be rising before the leg is thrown. I hit it about 1 in 5 but if I fail I hit tai otoshi pretty regularly? Just an optionals

Yup I use hcg and sleeve.

I think you may be on to something with the deep steps, that would certainly sort out my hip contact problem.

I guess it's different to static drilling where you're always taught to do the triangle and pull uke on to you.

I think I'll drill it like you said and not worry so much about pulling them onto me and I'll just practise bringing their weight down once I'm in deep. Then I'll bring some tsurikomi action into it once I'm comfortable with that.

remember, in harai and uchimata you're not throwing them over you, you're throwing them AROUND you.

Successfully used Judo at Karate training tonight.

There is this middle aged man that just started a couple months ago, and when it came time to spar, this fucker started sparring with like an 11 year old kid. As soon as I saw that, I had a sour taste in my mouth. On top of that, he was hitting this kid way harder than a grown man should be hitting an 11 year old. I made sure that I was the next guy that this dude was going to spar.

I toyed around with him for a couple of minutes with crescent kicks and flashy stuff, and when he rushed me I did a jump spinning back kick and nailed him right in the bread basket. I kicked as hard as I could, and I could see in his eyes that he really didn't want anymore. When I saw the opportunity, I grabbed his lapel and sleeve and went for a De Ashi Harai. It failed, but it set me up for an Osoto (this is for you Einarr).

The end result was me taking both of his feet out from under him (he had his heels together after the failed foot sweep) and him taking quite a tumble. We train break falls in Karate, but this guy made no attempt to break fall, and he took the full on impact on the ground, and then hit his head on the ground after failing to tuck his chin.

I was going to follow up with an axe kick, but he looked unresponsive. He got a little time to rest, but I made sure he was going to finish this round. I didn't know it at the time, but after that, the guy was disorientated. I caught a glimpse of his feet together so I threw a front teep kick to chest level, and this guy went flying across the dojo and nearly rips down some banners. I swear he was being theatrical at this point.

He was done after that. I hope the lesson got across.

Great brutal practice.

Only part of me that doesn't hurt is the ankle with the screws.

that's good man! for what you paid, your cyborg parts better goddamn fucking work

No shit, need to go the Wolverine route and get metal installed all over.

Definatly not at the "make the black belts work in randori" level I was before injury, mostly gas and I'm sure I might be a little gun shy.

My internet provider is going to block porn and gambling sites from next month or something. I'll need to change my settings to include them.

On a side note, great advice beepee. I hit what can only be described as a fantastic Uchi mata, IMO. First time in randori I've done one so clean.

Time for 4th judo practice in 5 days (MTTF) luckily got the weekend to recover (going light tonight)

and porn...

That's a given...

Working in multiple clubs really helps to get different perspectives and helps me get used to different games. There's a guy at my second club who's unfootsweepable and unreapable, which forces me to work on my big forward throws. As such, I've finally hit my first eri seoi nage (the one I always rep but could never hit live) in randori recently.

Oh right, I forgot to mention, I'm officially a judo creonte now. JTB showed me the righteous path.
