Sounds like you gentlemen have some pussies for BJJ partners.

And congrats RJ.

The only training partners of mine who have never complained, past or present, have been the guys who wrestle(d). They just match my intensity. Thankfully, after my creonte phase, I've settled back with my old team of former wrestlers. (which has judo-level training fees... I'm a lucky bastard)

I'm the only judoka on the team, though.

Congratulations on that stripe, dude.

We've got an old coach on the international circuit, he traps the arms with a belt grip and does a butterfly sweep. I've used it a bit in BJJ.

Watching high-level judo I've lost count of the amount of times I've seen a butterfly guard sweep used against opponents who have gone belly down.

It is far and away the most popular open guard in judo, particularly for older newaza specialists, which makes it all the more strange that people don't seem to be taught any passes for it.

Hikkomi-gaeshi from the standing position comes close to a butterfly guard sweep, I suppose. When your opponent use a notorious bent over stance you grab his belt, or low on his back, and sit down and just pull him over. This can be used when opponent shoot for your legs also…

I've been working my Butterfly guard for the last year...slowly getting better but I see myself transitioning to xguard and going for knee bars and toe holds (for CSW). In BJJ I use it to make space and stand up.

Even more so because you can pass it without getting off your knees too far, i.e. you can pass it without triggering a stand up.

Also, if you want to see some brilliant ne waza that's very butterfly-esque, look up Kashiwazaki's obi tori gaeshi turnover series. Dude murdered the turtle back in the day by basically throwing himself under people and butterfly sweeping them to osaekomi.

i wish Judo would eat some humble pie when it comes to groundwork, especially the old guard. i've heard lots of grey-haired men standing around pooh-poohing something they saw on TV or some failed sweep by the douche that showed up to the local judo tournament in a Ricky Bobby gi. it's the "why the hell would we ever adapt or evolve?" arrogance that keeps people away.

plus I'm ALWAYS the guy evangelizing for the other side. What's that once-a-month blue belt? Judo is for old fat guys and little kids? OSOTOGARI! BJJ is for people who can't throw good, brand new Shodan? Hokay, and sort-of true, but now I'm going to double-leg you and turn your gi into a gimp suit while you're still inside of it.

everybody should cross train. why be mediocre at one martial art when you can be mediocre at two?

Tbh I don't see BJJ as a necessity for being a good grappler, you can still have good newaza by just doing judo. The problem is, it'll always be very basic. That's the biggest thing I'm noticing at BJJ, yeah I'm holding my own with a few of them but they feel a lot more technical than I am and have more tools to use.

I feel like this will only become more apparent as I end up competing at a higher level, be it in judo or whatever else. Hence why I'm sticking with BJJ.

Also cool pic RJ.

TBH, I could not give less of a shit about whether or not BJJ or judo is better than the other, or being a complete grappler or whatever. I feel the same about sport BJJ vs. self defense BJJ.

I do both because I find both fun, for different reasons, with judo being slightly more so.

Well there's that too but at the same time, even if I found aikido fun, I wouldn't bother training it.

It is also sort of true (in the US) that Judo is for fat old guys and kids. Just look at the size of various brackets at any local tournament and you'll see this to be true. University clubs are probably about the only exception.

I do agree about cross training though. I was highly discouraged from doing so (mostly by Judo guys) when I first started BJJ back in the early 00's, but f*%& those guys. If you can roll a little, throw a little, and wrestle a little, you can almost always find a way to hang with someone above your level in any one art. Plus it's more fun; if I could only work on competition Judo technique my whole life I'd get really bored with grappling.

Seems like the judo legend from Japan, Mr. Saito, has passed away. RIP.
