Official Judo Thread VIII

Hit a sick Waki Gatame today in BJJ. Guy passed my guard and locked up a tea bag Kimura, I span out and turned his own grip into Waki Gatame. Thank you based Kano Jigoro.

I've never seen Waki Gatame against a resisting opponent before. Hespect.

Definitely trying that tai otoshi once my hand stops hurting.

Very ironic. We worked on Tai Otoshi for an hour yesterday.

I think RJ has been snorting Oxiclean and chasing it down with bleach.

Btw I had nose surgery this morning, seems like it went well. Surgeon said it had been broken 4-5 separate times. Couldn't breathe through it for shit. Now I gotta wait a few months and dream of resuming training.

Zanky gonna be FAAAAAT studyin all that couch-fu

Is JBJ at your bar right now, RJ? :)

Well I have been hoping to bulk up to 215 anyways, using my new weight set, but I suspect that goal will be accomplished with lard instead of muscle.

Serious? I use it quite often in BJJ especially - most jiujiteiros don't know it. Also broke a bag-grabber's* arm with it on da str33tz.

*is this a real word in English?

how much do you typically weigh?

haha, the vault!

Zankou, I'll meet you at 215, i'm down to 225 from my heaviest of 260. I would like to be 199 again.

I sure do get quality sleep now that i'm smaller...or maybe that's because the wife has been deployed for the last 5 months. :icon_lol:

Before my cut I got up to 205 but now sitting at about 178. Plan is to get back down to around 165 probably. One thing I hate about cutting is that my upper body lifts go way down. I can still make pretty good progress on deadlift and squat while cutting but so far my OHP has went from 200 to maybe 175 if I'm lucky. My bench was at about 270 and I haven't tested it since cutting but I could easily rep 225 for 5 or more reps a couple of sets and now it is a struggle to get 3 reps.

Glad it went ok Zankou.

I'm up to 195 atm from injuries and xmas, I'm usually only about 180 when I'm competing. Well, I say that, I have a competition in a couple of weeks but I'm going to have to compete at -90kg.

It's a perfectly cromulent word.

It is, but it's 'purse snatcher'.

So, y'know. Explanations are due.

Well, he grabbed my gi bag and tried to run off with it. Caught his wrist and did a Waki Gatame/bodyslam-on-the-elbow. Not fun times for him.

Haha, I'm sure English is the only language where you can have been speaking it fluently since you were 5 and still have to look things up in the dictionary.

Standing Waki gatame in judo competitions used to get Ippon if the effect was “obvious”, how the rules are nowadays I can’t say;

And here some other versions;

Lol why the fuck would someone try and steal a gym bag?

Edit: I usually do waki gatame when the opponent is on top of me when I'm on all fours and sticks an arm through. Then you just grab it and roll through

I've hit (and been hit with) Waki-Gatame in newaza before, and even with a lot of control it gets a bit scary when you feel that pressure.

I can't imagine what if feels like after hitting the floor ( Or cobblestones. Or magma. Whatever you have over there in Skyrim.)

JTB: That's the only way I've landed it. Works great.

Been submitted with Waki in competition, not fun.

i TAed the university's 10am T/R Hapkido class for about 8 years.

wakigatame is like the 3rd thing we taught people. i'm pretty sure nothing holds my left elbow together except hopes and dreams.
