Downloading this game for the first time. Had some time and the reviews are just to good to ignore. I'm aware I need to bring lube for my arsehole.

So, any tips? Is there a good build I should shoot for as an Elden Ring noob?

Any general gameplay advice to get the most out of it?

Biggest tip I can give is if something seems to hard just go another direction. Explore as much as you can before fighting your first boss.

Samurai used to be good for bleed not sure if that still holds up.

Here are my beginner tips

I get the distinct feeling that you're supposed to use summons. In prior games boss fights were such that you could come to understand patterns and movesets, and finish them all on your own- they were basically puzzles. In Elden Ring this is not quite the same. There's a reason you're able to summon not just for boss fights, but for a lot of the map area.

While any given playthrough gives you enough upgrade items such that you can upgrade your favorite stuff up to +10 (or +25 for normal), be a little choosy when deciding what you're upgrading-- especially equipment that calls for Somber Smithing Stones. I think for the first part of the game you're only going to get one sequence of +5, +6, +7 and +8.

Truly don't worry about dying too much. It can be so very aggravating but it is part of the game-- seeing what happened and thinking about what you can do differently next time. There are some things that happen that just really don't seem fair at all. But with maybe one exception there are always little clues that indicate traps, ambushes, etc. The feeling you get when you start to detect these things before they happen is also intended, and it's good.

Finally got around to returning to that damn storm castle, cleared it after lots of dying. Face final boss, cutscene plays! It tells me to kneel! It dies on the first try lol what a disappointment. I died to some stupid ass birds with blade legs at least 5 times. But bossboi, naah.

I rate Stormveil castle 4/10

I got teleported to some divine bridge where a golem that was just like every other golem but with about 50 times more hp and killed me in two hits, had to beat its leg for like 4 minutes to kill it. But that place has nowhere to go, at least I got some talisman that gives some hp regeneration which I quess is nice when exploring and THOSE DAMN POISON CAVES.

This I've pretty much explored the whole starting place and zone just south of it. Off to some swampland.

At the mage academy now, feels much better so far than the shitty stormveil castle. I dont think this great rune I got from the boss at the castle actually does anything at all? It is supposed to raise all my stats but with it equipped my stats on the status page are same as without it?

Cleared the place, full moon boss another disappointment, killed on third try. Dont even know what killed me on the first try while trying to figure out what to do. Also the corpse run was stupid, why do they do it?

I think you have to power up the great rune after you get it. I forget how you do it though took me a while to figure out.

I was annoyed by a door that was opened from elsewhere in the academy so while exploring for it I got sent to volcano place where I am trapped and boss is two of the annoying abductors and that fight is just stupid.

edit. did not take all that long but damn that is a stupid fight.

I keep waiting for something truely amazing like Pure Vessel or Nightmare King Grimm and I keep getting this shit thrown at my face.

Yeah there's a tower you activate it at then you have to equip it at the grace site.

I have it activated and equipped but my stats are all the same even though it says that it raises all attributes.

Did you use a rune arc? That’s the only way you can use great runes.

You can Cheese them with a shield and whip. Jump on the rock and you can attack without getting hit. The shield is to block the spinning move. I run through there for somber on my low level guys.
