Bandai has their presser tomorrow, so I expect more info on it.

With Tales of Arise in Sep and Scarlet Nexus on the 24th (June) should be a good 8 months of revenue for them! I'm super excited for both of these!

Oh wow didn't realize scarlet nexus was that soon. Very nice. I'll still be in the middle of ME during that time but that's fine. I can wait for reviews and see what people think first.

Think I’m going with the PS5 Collector’s whenever that is shown. All my Souls games have their initial playstation releases and I can’t imagine the PC version will run that much better given it’s using their old engine.

I'm still not sure which version to go for. I've got a couple of Soulsbourne games to get through still. Some on PC and some on PS5 so i should be able to decide what i'm most comfortable with after victory has been achieved.

Miyazaki just broke down the trailer himself via IGN. Extremely insightful

cliffs:
-there will be a hub area where you can fast travel
-Players can obtain weapon arts and spells, and equip them to whatever weapon you want, making builds more customizable and richer
-The player character known as the tarnished has been drawn back to the land between, a tarnished is a person who has lost the golden luster in their eyes, whatever that means. They were exiled from the lands between because of this. The Elden her ring broke for some unknown reason, and it drew them back to the lands. Miyazaki says the main theme of the game is to figure out why we were drawn back to the land
-Miyazaki wanted to emphasize that the main bosses were not inherently evil. But heroic figures of an old time who had been corrupted and twisted by the shards of the elden ring
-weapon arts and skills are collected by exploring the open world and finding them.
-The bosses were all created by George RR Martin‘s writing, And designed by fromsoft based on Martin’s lore
-You can tackle the kingdoms in any order you like in the beginning of the game, but some areas will not be accessible until later
-You can also summon enemy characters to help you in battle, aside from player characters and NPC’s
-The idea of the tarnished was created by George RR Martin
-still no news on PVP/invasions

Just to be upfront, I'm not a huge fan of the Souls series...

Didn't From Software say they were done making Souls games? This looks JUST like a Souls game so I'm confused.

@Valhoven How many posts per thread until it is locked and a V2 needs to be made?
We really only minded a cut-off of around 1000 posts (so 500 from now, for reference) because of limitations with vBulletin, which was our older forum software. Discussions under XenForo can nowadays go as long as they're active but for indexing, page-loading, air-clearing purposes we still sometimes observe the 1000 mark. If you fancy this a megathread for all ER talk, we can make it so but it might be a good look to thread a no-spoiler v.2 discussion closer to launch – or then maintain this for play-external chat and host a distinct gameplay thread with class/WPN whatnot guidance, runback rants, boss tips et cetera.

Theyre done making Dark Souls, which doesn't mean they cant use the same mechanics and gameplay elements in other games. Look at Sekiro, Bloodborne etc and I expect this will follow a similar thing.

I get they're good at making that type of game and developers tend to stick with what they know (whether that's good or bad... Ubisoft and their goddamn tower mechanic to open the map, BioWare and the story based RPG with dialogue wheel)...

But it feels like a re-skinned Souls game... guess I'm just not a huge fan of the series as a whole so that's probably why I feel this way.

I mean, the Dark Souls 4 quips aren't without merit but they're a product of an unfinished thought, IMO – and that being that ER is a title of the studio's unmistakable signature, which when thought of this way doesn't seem grounds for criticism, at least to my mind. From gonna From, to say.

I get it, they have a formula that works really well so they're going to run with it.

I guess I just thought they were going to pull a Kojima like he did with Death Stranding and do something completely different with their next title. Kojima said hew as done with the MGS series and stealth games in general after he broke with Konami and then did Death Stranding so I was expecting From to have like a new art style at the very least and new game style.

The thing is, they may have literally meant that when they finished Dark Souls 3 five years ago, but then got off track and decided to go back to their bread and butter.

I often think back to the development of Quake 1. After the success of Wolfenstein 3D and Doom a few of the guys at ID software wanted to go in a completely different direction with Quake, John Romero in particular who was doing all these interviews in PC Gamer describing his vision for a game that honestly sounded more like the Elder Scrolls than anything ID’s ever made. But after a challenging and lengthy process of developing the game’s engine (by mid-1990s standards) John Carmack’s preference was to just get a game out and shipped as quickly as possible so he said “let’s just make another Doom game” and so they put it to a vote and the majority of the company sided with Carmack and so the final product was that Quake wasn’t very different from Doom in any meaningful way. Romero was disgusted and quit ID software as soon as Quake was finished. Iirc his last day was literally the day the game released. He skipped their office release party, went home and never came back.

You can play Sekiro, and even though its of the same vein as a DS game, its a vastly different experience. You can play FC4 and have the same experience as FC3.

Elden Ring is probably gonna be the same, in that its a new experience but the DNA is there.

From is on a different calibre to Bioware or Ubisoft, theyre not on the same league lol.

I'm not comparing them in terms of quality so nice job trying to refute an argument I wasn't even fucking making.

The comparison I am trying to make is how From seems to have found a formula and stuck with it to the point that I thought Elden Ring was a trailer for a new Souls DLC the same way one tower from FC3 looks like a tower from FC4 or 5 and how BioWare's dialogue wheel changes art style a bit but is still basically the same.

The DNA is so similar that you could remove the overlays and I'd think I'm watching Dark Souls 4 in terms of art style. At least Sekiro had a different setting.

Dark Souls... dead guy that somehow isn't dead and is collecting souls fighting monsters. Edlen Ring, guy banished from his land collecting shit that has corrupted Old Gods with the same art style and roll mechanics.

That's my issue. It'd be like Kojima saying "I'm leaving MGS behind to create a new IP!"

And then he makes a game taking place in WWII with an OSS agent sneaking around in Europe named Doggo instead of Snake trying to stop them from launching a V1 rocket with a nuke attached to it.

I can admit I personally don't have the patience for a game like the Souls series, Bloodborne, or Sekiro. When they say they were moving on from Souls I expected them to change up the formula a little bit is all I guess. Like, I don't expect them to move from Souls to making a Devil May Cry style action game but I thought they'd at least change up the art style, setting style, and gameplay style a little bit from what they did with Souls.

EDIT:
To use a different analogy it's like seeing a chef who is an expert at say making food from like the North of India saying they're going to change it up... and then start making food from the East of India.

Like yeah, it's different but just how different is it really?

EDIT 2:
I'm not trying to convince anyone to not buy the game, just throwing out my observations of the game is all. This is the first From release or trailer I've seen where Twitter promptly was dropping memes about how it looked like a reskin/redub of Souls. They didn't do it for Bloodborne or Sekiro and this game they did.

I said it in a joking tone, no need to get mad. Its the truth though, From >>> Bioware/Ubisoft.

I can see that.

Thats an okay analogy, I guess. Its just that no one makes the food like From, so many imitators but no one comes close. Compared to an Ubisoft title, where many other devs have bettered them in their own formula. GoT is pretty much an AC game, thats perfected. Ill keep coming back for that 3 star Michelin star food from FromSoftware.

I work in a job where people will try to say you're saying something completely opposite than what you actually said (legal field) so I get snippy with shit like that. Sorry.

Like I said, people that love it will likely love this.

I've missed a lot of the From hype simply by not having a Playstation for the first Souls game and then missing Bloodborne and Sekiro as well. But even then, the story of the Souls games at least just reeks of that weird wanna be deep but isn't super deep anime storyline shit that Japan does that annoys me lol.

It's a lot of text and talking to NPCs that behave like statues.

Grumble.

I know it probably makes me a simpleton but if a game has story I don't want it via text in this day and age damnit.

Well this game looks like they've moved passed that, but the earlier souls games were much more like that.

I think the rolling around combat is pretty weird and clunky.

It must have worked casue Ubisoft attempted to copy it with Origins and every AC after that...

IDK, I might try this one simpley cause fat fuck GRRM is involved but I also don't want to cause that fat fuck isn't finishing his goddamn book series cause of projects like this.

Ahh no worries mate. Fucking hate corporate bullshit speak aswell which seems similar. Fake people insinuating instead of saying what they mean pisses me off.

The stories are whatever you want it to be, youd definitely like it if you like the type of world building GRRM does. Honestly, you can take or leave the lore and explore and play the games, but the lore adds so much. The Vaati videos and others just added to the experience. To me these games are true experiences, in that youre completely immersed in everything. Its why the people that love these games cant get enough.
