I can't read simplified chinese and i don't use mainland apps, but according to multiple chinese twitter users in the comments to the tweet, this was actually one of the more tame statements from the developer and it apparently reads even more harshly in chinese.

They are mainland chinese. As a consequence of decades of the one child policy, there are like 40 million more men than women in the PRC. So it is statistically not unlikely.

I know this post is old but I just saw it. You’re aren’t considering the fact that game developers live in major cities. This matters because in these places the female to male ratio is nearly the same. What you’re saying only really applies to rural, less developed places . Take a visit to any major urban area and you wouldn’t know the difference. People forget China is the third largest country in the world if you don’t include lakes
Monkey King is also Goku and a plethora of other Asian heroes. A lot of anime leads are based on him to some extent. Always thought he was a pretty cool "religious" figure because no one pretends his story is real and people adapt and use it all the time.
